show names- why have them? i dont understand wht people have show names because half of the owners that give one to there horse dont use it when they enter a show, so i dont get what the big deal is with them, nearly everyone on my yard has a show name for thier horse or pony even if they dont go to any shows!? and when your show jumoing does it matter if you plate the horse up or not because im sick of getting up early to sew her plates in when im only jumping even tho its a local show everyone elses horses are plated up yet to show jumpers dont plate thier horses up? do i or dont i??

show names are a bit of fun, i use the name my pony came with for showing as thats his prefix. as for plaiting manes, never heard of having to plait for jumping, some people plait their horses for fun.

mine have show names and they get used when they compete, wherever they compete be it local or county level.
Re plaiting: I always plait up. I think its polite and youve put some effort into getting ready to look the part. Maybe thats just the way ive been brought up?
I once went show jumping on an evening and it was noted by lots of the spectators that I was the only 1 that had plaited up out of the 100+ competitors that night. I got lots of comments saying they were pleased that someone had made the effort!

I never plait for SJ although I do make sure his make is nicely pulled and laid. If I plaited it then I would have nothing to hold onto

I do plait for dressage or showing though.

I always use my horses show name no matter what show I enter.

My ponies full name is Primrose Of Tower, Rosie for short. I am always very proud to use her full name. "Tower" is her breeders prefix and I always look out for other Tower ponies and ponies related to her. She is flying the flag for her breeder. I would hope that when I breed and sell my own ponies that people would keep and use the ponies full name.

Ive never ever plaited a horse up for show jumping! Its certainly not the norm at competitions I go to (unaffiliated and BSJA), so dont bother in future!

I think its a bit silly giving horses shownames if they dont actually compete. But competition wise, you pretty much need to give show names to give more variety. I mean, there could be loads of "Sam"s doing BSJA for example, obviously you cant have a horse registered with a specific name more than once hence a show name is easier!!

Personally I only have show names (the 2 I have now I didnt make up, they were already on their passports) for the ones I compete, my other retired ponies dont have show names.
