So how do all you clever show people get the white bits of your horse really white? my horse has white legs and I have tried everything to get them to not look yellow! He is in at night so although comes in to a clean bed it's always like a pig sty by the morning and this results in him getting yellow legs.

I have tried, Cowboy magic, Fairy Liquid, Whitener shampoos, baby shampoo, medicated shampoo, Dirty Beast shampoo, Lynn Russell stain remover, other brand stain removers etc etc, obviously not all at the same time, but my bank balance over the last year has taken a big hit on stain removing 'stuff'!!!

Apart from clipping the hair off and contacting my hairdresser for a big bottle of bleach(!) have you ANY suggestions?? When I look at other horses at shows you almost have to wear sunglasses to look at the white bits there must be some secret out there, let me in on it please!!!

Chalk gives the final whiter than white look. But make sure that you put it on before you do your hoof oil. Practise with it at home - I always find it easier to get a handful of loose chalk and rub it into the leg. Then let them move about to get the excess off. Some people do it on wet legs and then brush them off when they are dry.

If your horse is has a lot of feather (like a traditional) be careful with chalk or talc as it can make the hair look dry instead of silky. Always wash in warm water if you can as this seems to help lift any greasy dirt. Treseme deep cleansing shampoo is great and there are nearly always offers for two large bottles at the supermarkets. Try and deal with the worst stains as you find them (Dungaway is good) so they don't become too engrained in the hair. Remember that the hair always looks a lot whiter when it drys. You could also leave legwraps on overnight to dry and keep the legs clean.

i use talcum powder - when legs still damp smother in talc and brush off excess, i do this the night before!

then in the morning i use more talc or chalk if i have it, and rub it in and then brush off the excess, then for extra whiteness i paint his hooves black with shiney hoof polish, which makes the white stand out!

Another vote for Tresemme here - and then finish with a really purple shampoo. Just make sure that you rinse well.

I once put whitener near Star's feather - and never again. They clumped and immediately looked grey rather than white!

Chalk is the way to go - i use a chalk powder & mix it with a bit of water, then put it on with a sponge - works everytime - no need to scrub socks ever again!!

We have coloureds, we used to use LOC from AMWAY but it is now difficult to get hold of. Used to get lots of comments from judges "how did you get them feathers so white" and they look natural and not cloged up with products.

This is what i do, put it on when wet and brush off when dry, have just put some pics in PG of Blue today when i'd chalked him up for a show only to find show was cancelled!

The best whitening shampoo i have used is one called Quick Silver, it is thick and deep purple! its available in most tack shops its brill to get the best results i wet the white socks or the white area or the stained bit and then pour it on neat rub it in and get a lather leave it on for 10 minutes then rinse off. And if it was me personally i would towel dry his legs, talc them and bandage him up with fibre gee or gamgee pads and stable bandages, Iam not saying I know it all but i have worked with a pure white horse and this was the method I used and he was always bright white! And he could always find s**t to roll in. pm me if this works on your boy.
