show people? is it a no go or am i just over thinking? (pic overload)

I thinking about taking my (then be two year old) to the county show. he is a welsh section d. And has good conformation and movement. I know that him now being gelded will effect his chance of placing. i have been out the last season local and he has never been placed less then thrid and that was even against more mature welshies in some classes. Im worrying because im not a professional that people will think what the hell is she doing lol!! Could anyone give me any pointers to what he may be put down for.. and what to expect.. and if they think it would be a good idea to take him.

not everyone who goes county level is proffesional! i no many people who do it for fun and just for the chance of getting to hoys/olympia - not aiming for it!!!
if you have the horse..have some fun! you never know where you may end up :)
for a yearling/riseing 2 he looks very 'grown up' .... or may be im just use to wobbly tb and wb's!!!
 
Friend has never shown a horse in her life but started with her Sec D youngster this year and did fantastically well qualifying for PUK at their second show. She won one class at PUK and was placed in another.

So, yes!! Go for it as long as you enjoy it and have fun.
 
The WPCS are trying to promote the Welsh geldings and run a scheme with the Millcroft Stud. All the information is on their website.
Having a young Sec D that you want as a potential ridden cob in the future is a very different animal to the 'serious' inhand show cob as I have found out.
 
I am sorry to say that a gelding has to be AMAZING to compete against stallions and mares at
County/affiliated level but that is not to say you will not do well.

where ave you seen him?not sure yet theres a few around im looking at. its only really to get out and about more as he will be for ridden in the future. so its for all the people and noise ect ect. lol

i can agree no gelding will ever look as good as a stallion. but its all for the experiance even if he didnt get placed and just did as i asked of him all day i would be pleased i want him for ridden classes when hes older and know its judged on a few things.

It's good to take them out of their comfort zone as well though- Gunner still has days when he acts like a total brat at local level, but at county there's so much to keep him occupied that he's much better behaved as his brain is occupied!

In welsh youngstock, the colts are not as different to the geldings as they are in adult classes anyway, just have fun!! I'm going to be gutted when I give gunners youngstock trophies back next year, and have enjoyed every minute of having him out! X
 
I think he's stunning and clearly has that beautiful Welshie action. Can't comment on the gelding/stallion issue as that could probably do with a whole thread of its own ;). One thing I would say though, and shoot me down if you must, in the first two pics particularly, I think he's carrying too much weight.

In the later pics, where he is a better weight, his neck is far more elegant and shaped. Weight makes it look a bit short and stubby. Diet for him OP!!!

And.. what ever is he doing to that otherwise immaculate painted wall? Does he think he is Picasso?? Made me chuckle as it's just what ours would do.

He does look very grown up :) my welshie will be 3 in may and he's no where near as mature looking as your little man.....he's lovely :)
 
Go for it! He looks like a lovely boy and so long as he has nice manners and is well prepared he should do you very proud. Being a gelding in itself should not affect your chances in the showring. Keep in the back of your mind that showing is very much a personal preference and so although judges should be looking for the same kind of faults (poor conformation, poor manners, being incorrectly turned out for example having an ill-fitting bridle that either swamps his head or is too fine for his head) but beyond that if you and another competitor are similarly placed in the judges mind based on all that then it really is simple preference. What I will say is please don't think you have to be a professional to show your boy. Consider it a fun day out for the two of you, plus all the fun you can have getting him ready and pampering him beforehand, go out there and do your best and let the bond you have as an "amateur" (said in the nicest possible sense!!) shine through. Good luck and enjoy yourselves!!

Yeah the first two photos or the most recent :O he seems to be having abit of a growth spur atm as he is quite bum high at the moment hopefully it will even out if not he will be cut down on food for abit ( bless him), i can tell from his belly he is going to be the type of cob that just has to look at grass and be fat!! LOL

Oh the walls he has a thing for spreading his food all over the wall, im sure he does it on purpose as he knows its getting to me as i normally paint my stable every summer... little bugger.

Good idea for the stallion/ gelding thread sure loads of people would comment on why and whats best lol.. i found out that he wouldnt compete against stallions its normally barren mare and gelding class. unless its a local show then there all in one.:)
