I'm doing a dressage comp at my yard in a few weeks time. It's very low key, and you don't have to wear show stuff but this time I thought I would as I already have half of what I need to wear.

I've already got black leather boots and gaiters and beige breeches, black hat and my friend is lending me a jacket.

I need to buy a show shirt, to wear with a stock like this... what kind of shirt would be best? (have never done anything like this before!) and also all the sizes seem to be in inches- what size would a size 12 be?

Many thanks!!

If doing it as a one off would buy a cream/white poloneck from a cheap place and a stock looks just as smart and you cannot tell any difference.

It's not a one off as I'll be doing dressage throughout the summer along with showing and showjumping... if I could get a shirt in which I could do all three that would be a bonus but if not I need a shirt to wear a stock with asap!!

Anyone got any pics of the kind of shirt I'd need to wear a ready tied stock with?

alternatively you can nick a shirt and tie from your OH or dad. A shirt and tie is perfectly acceptable for low level dressage.

they dont tend to be as the collar tends to keep popping off ive found.

Id just buy a shirt and tie, you can do everything in them and you can buy them cheap from tescos/asda.

I do dressage in shirt and tie, and they are perfectly acceptable for showjumping as well.

Best to buy a stock shirt. Along the lines of this

But if I were you I would learn to tie a real stock as they are so much smarter

For showing you'll need a shirt and tie, so it might be worth going for that if your jacket is tweed. If the jacket is black or blue, it's correct to wear a cream or white stock rather than shirt and tie.

A shirt and tie are less expensive than a stock and stock shirt (especially if you got to tesco or asda like connie girl says), so you might be able to manage getting both if you need to, then you'll be ready for all eventualities!

virtual, in showing even if you are wearing a navy jacket a tie is correct except for evening preformances. A black jacket is not correct for showing.

Ok now don't laugh lol.. I'm new to this competition lark

If i bought a shirt like the one kirstyfk pictured i'd just wear the stock over the neck? that's the kind of shirt I've been looking at. I'll be wearing a black or blue jacket...

tbh by the time summer comes I'll probably buy another shirt with a collar for showing so I can wear a tie with it... just trying to cover the dressage bit for the mo!!

Sorry I know that (I'm an affiliated judge), I was talking about blue and black for dressage, though reading it back it does sound like I was talking about blue and black for showing!

I bought a short sleeve white blouse from Tesco for £2.50, cut the collar off and altered it for the show style collar. I bought a size bigger so I would have good shoulder room.

sorry virtual, i think i misread your post pleas dont take offence at all..

Twizzle, for anything up to medium level dressage a shirt and tie is fine, even county showjumping is fine with a shirt and tie, and showing is always with a shirt and tie.

for stressage id just buy a cheapo shirt and tie from asda and it will do you fine for all disciplines.l

If you are a size 12 go to Tescos and get the largest school kids shirts - they fit great and only cost a few quid.

For showing put them in a hot wash with a Tescos value yellow duster - result one nice yellow shirt for showing. Get a cheap silk tie off ebay or charity shop in a colour to match your jacket/outfit.

Now with the money you have saved you can go out and get another shirt and stock for dressage.

For low level dressage you will be be fine with a white shirt - tescos school shirts come in packs of three and a tie. If you are handy with a needle, you could remove the collar from the shirt and then just use a stock.
