I have never done showing before but I have a 2 year old sports gelding. He is quite fine and have been told he would be good in hack classes. I know there are sports horse classes but not at the show I am going to in April.

What turnout is expected? Is it any colour tweed? I don't have a velvet hat, is that required? I will plait mane.. how many plaits? Is it ok to plait on the wrong side (natural way his mane lies) is a pulled tail ok or does it need to be plaited?

I will bit as he can be a bit boisterous and has never been out before!

What is expected for his show?

Finally any suggestions for travel boots that wil fit tall narrow legs?

Thanks for reading this far!!

Tweed jacket, shirt tie and trousers for you, try to lay your hands on a beagler, you will probably be able to pick one up quite reasonably second hand. Coloured velvet browband for him.

You will need to plait the mane on the correct side and a pulled/raked tail is more correct than a plaited one.

He will need to stand up properly for the judge and lead willingly from the shoulder. Walk away and trot back in a straight line so that the judge can see he moves straight. Lots of practice at home is the key.
Large hacks are to make no more than 15.3 so hopefully he's not going to make a big strapping type of Sports Horse

Where are you off to?

Tweeds for sport horse but you might need to show on a triangle so make sure you can turn him while trotting. Usual individual show it is walk away from the judge in a straight line, turn to the right (always turn him away from you), walk a few steps back toward the judge and start to trot back towards the judge when he is straight again, don't trot on the turn as you will make him look like bambi on ice trying to get his balance. He should be at your side and trotting in an open free trot but not too fast nor jogging so you need to practise big strides to keep up. Traditionally trousers should be the opposite of his legs white/light legs dark trousers and viceversa. Purely sport horse classes may be whites but check out the show online as it can vary and is walk a triangle, trot a triangle keeping good balance
