Hi all,

So I'm hoping to do a little bit of showing next year with my new mare. She's not the best quality and I know that - I was just looking for something sensible to hack and that would live out, and she still needs some schooling - but I'd still like to go to a couple of local shows with her, just for fun :D

Now I don't really have much experience with showing, I've done a couple of in hand, and one Ridden Mountain and Moorland class on my Welsh D and that's it :p. So, I'm not really sure what to show my mare in! She's a registered Welsh cross (don't know anything about her sire, except that he is called Worcester), 4 years old and about 15hh/15.1hh although is still bum high and a bit baby-like looking, needs to fill out. She has very uphill movement, long and straight strides, better trot than my purebred Welsh D!

Coloured Classes:
I don't think she is stocky enough to go in a coloured class as a traditional cob, despite her having a very long, thick mane (it was cut short in the photo), a little feather and being natural looking. The other option (I believe!) is for her to be shown as a coloured hunter. However, I don't really know what they look for in a hunter...

Ridden Hunter/Working Hunter:
I assume she would be a middleweight hunter (?) although I believe there is a Small Hunter class which looks for one about her height that is middleweight - but I don't really know what is classed as 'middleweight' tbh.

Part Bred Welsh:
I really have no idea what they look for in these classes!

Any suggestions are welcome!
Anything I can work on with her for next year?
(apologies, the top two are in her old home, not me riding her... I will take some new photos soon)

Tbh I would plait her up and show her as a plaited coloured, turn her out as a hunter type.
She is correct height for the small hunters (max 15.2hh) but Is a bit too ponyish to do well above local level in those classes. If you can get her to measure under 15hh and you are under 20 she would be better off in the hunter pony classes.

Just as a comparison this is my coloured small hunter

I have a welsh part bred about the same height. Had him from a yearling, he is 6 now. He has filled out soo much and I don't think his finished yet, he went through a gangly stage!
I have trimmed his feathers and pulled his mane and show him plaited. We have done well in coloured classes and hunter classes (only local level).
You could leave her as she is and show her as a coloured native but not all shows have these classes. I believe welsh part breds are shown plaited/trimmed.
She would look like a warmblood in the traditional classes (I found this out!)
I have always been told either feathers and mane or plaits and no feathers!.
It really depends what level you are showing at as well, you could easily show her at small local shows left natural as a native.
Mine was a lot like her when he was a 4 year old, now people are saying I should hog him and show him as a show cob he has filled out that much! He has too much of a welsh head and the welsh action though to pass as one of them!
You have the bonus of her having a lovely black tail, much easier to keep clean!.

You can show as a coloured native type, though yours might better suit plaiting up :) No reason you couldn't have a go as a partbred locally too- they seem to be an anything goes class around here!

I wouldn't turn her out as a native, unless they look like a coloured section D then they rarely do well. Yours would look better plaited
