Can anyone help please? I have a lovely yearling filly entered into a coloured class at the end of May but I have no idea what to do with her mane/tail? Do I plait or leave it down? She is tb/welsh/id/wb. She has a bit of feather too but not much so I think perhaps that should come off. Any help greatly appreciated. I don't know how to upload photo's on here but I can certainly send pics.

My friend showed his coloured yearling last year. he is cob x warmblood and sounds quite similar to yours. We plaited mane and tail though we were later told we could have pulled his tail. His (minimal) feather was removed. He was shown in an in hand bridle. bitted with a small rubber snaffle. Hope that helps a bit.

Where I work we show coloured youngstock. Yours sounds like more a sport horse so plait its mane, no feather, excess hair! 2 years olds probs should have a pulled tail, but yearlings can get away with plaited, though it sounds like it will be quite hunter(ish) so tunout for as if you were doing hunter breeding classes.

I have just had the same query. I have an 11 month tri coloured filly i would like to show in 3 weeks. I have a friend who is a judge and she said sport horse types should be plaited (mane and tail), trimmed, with an in hand bridle. The bridle can be bitted or non bitted with a little rubber in hand show bit, with a double clip lead rein, that clips onto both sides of the bit.
Pulling a yearlings tail at such a young age does not always go down well with the judges- so i am told. (??)
Good luck :0)
