I have never done showing but have a Welsh D just turned 4 that I would like to take to show in hand, there is a class for this at a show coming up in August. When we got him a year ago he was not up to weight or muscle, but is looking good now so would like to try if only to get him the experience.
So this is where you guys can help!!!!!!!!! How do I present him ie. au natural or what should I do with his mane and tail, he is black but the ends of his mane and forelock are split and bleached looking (not a good look)
Also what do I wear?
Sorry if all you experienced people are recoiling in horror, but I have to start somewhere.
Thanks for getting this far and hopefuly giving me advice.

Welshies are shown au naturale

we never recoil in horror.

au naturel is the way to go just very clean and in a bridle.

What you do with mane I think is personal preference, my boys has always been long but I pulled it this year as he was getting very hot under it when doing fast work. If it looks a bit tatty at the ends I would take these off to smarten up, I used to do this an you have to take off very little and not really shorten it (with a pulling comb though) for it to look much better.

Tail up to you, welsh tails tend to be pointed, not straight (mine is though!) and quite short to show off the hocks but again I would stick to what you like.- I don't do a lot of showing so it doesn't dictate what mine looks like!

To wear.

I would wear comfortable shoes to run fast in or trainers! and some smart trousers in a colour that compliments him, poss a creamy colour?

Cobs in hand are generally shown with their tales off to their hocks however if they have bad hocks then you would leave the tail long (not on the floor) the main can be trimmed to appear neat and tidy but I would say minimum 8" . DO NOT cut your cobs tail straight but rather cut into it to leave a natural look (feathered appearance)

Taffster, He has a really thick tail which is easier to cut straight, but I will have plenty to play with so will try and point it without taking much off to see how it will look. Personaly I love his tail the way it is, but if it must be altered then so be it.

if you do point, you want to not take off too much length first as it can end up looking shorter than it really is after feathering.

Apologies for having a straight tail taffster, but am not sure the pointy look would suit him!- and I can't be bothered, its easier with the clippers
