I want to show my piebald cob as a traditional this summer - so I have kept his mane and feathers. His winter clip has now grown out, but as a result he gets very sweaty when I exercise him. What clip could he have (if any) that would be acceptable for the show ring? He also lives out.

If showing a traditional, you shouldn't clip, sorry! At the max, you could clip him out and leave the mane/feathers. Alternatively, show him in the cob class all clipped and hogged.

I clip my traditional cob, just leave legs, mane and head on. Never had a judge comment on it.
you can just make out the lines at the top of his legs and around his jaw.

In winter I show Stinky full clipped but leave the front of his face on and his legs. End of January he gets his last clip and I take his legs down to just below his knees/hocks.

I don't need to clip him in summer as he has a fine silky coat, as does our current Clydesdale. However, the previous cob and clydesdale we had grew thicker and not as silky coats and these I did clip in summer or they really sweated up just standing in the field.

This is Jemima - she was full clipped three weeks prior to this picture so by the time she went to the show, she looked good again.

Piebalds are easier than skewbalds when clipping as they don't loose their colour.

Some people clip their traditionals about three weeks or so before HOYS so they don't have thick coats.

Just take your time, go down to the knees and very carefully blend in and don't touch the hair. Make sure you have three weeks before you have a show when clipping to allow the hair to grow back to look more like a summer coat. Use good sharp blades so you don't get tram lines.
