Hi all! i am entering my first ever showing class with my horse next month (the fife show) It is the coloured ridden class and i am just looking for some advice about what is expected from us?
I have been told that for showin they want to see horses in as little tack as possible! is this right and if so what would be best as he's currently ridden in a 3 ring waterford grackle bridle with double reins and a martingale?
What do they expect riders to wear?
They aslo ask for a display, what do they usually look for you to do in the display?

Any advice for this would be very much appreciated!

Double bridle or pelham would be correct, or a snaffle if it's a novice class. Martingales are incorrect for a ridden showing class, as are grackles.

Rider- tweed jacket, shirt and tie, velvet hat, gloves, long boots. The general rule is black or white should not be seen in the show ring (apart from your long boots).

Individual show should include walk, trot, canter on each rein (I usually work on a sort of figure of 8 pattern) then extended canter up the long side. Don't forget to halt and salute in front of the judge when you're done.

Also no numnah and carry a brown/ black show cane.
Showing is largely about good behaviour and going well, ie not dropping back to trot whilst your cantering and coming back to walk as soon as the steward asks.
You could wear a navy/ black jacket if you have a fine horse but I do prefer tweed with a tie and velvet hat.
Some local shows also ask you to take the saddle off and run your horse up in hand, so make sure you practice this at home and that you have someone who can come in the ring with a brush and to help you get back on.
 
If you are showing your horse as a Hunter you will want him in a plain bridle with a thick cavason noseband either snaffle, pelham or double bridle. A numnah can be worn under your saddle but its to be discrete and either brown or black depending on your tack. No martingale or boots. Plaited mane and either a pulled or very very neat plaited tail which should not be trailing along the ground.

Your clothes - tweed jacket, preferably a blue hat, brown gloves long black boots and cream or canary breeches/jods. brown cane/short crop. Check rules over wearing spurs in a coloured class. Shirt and tie.

Check out some of the equestrian photographer sites and see what the coloureds are turned out like.

Your Judge likes well schooled horses, and you will do an individual show. If you are not pulled in top then look at what others are doing and copy.
