Hi, erm, i've been showing for many years and got to county in the last two years. i've always been on show ponies though!

im 16 but very tall and skinny haha. i would love a middle weight hunter but people are saying i'd look overhorsed.

some people have said get a riding horse but i dont know what size they need to be etc.

can anyone give me some advice on suggestions of type of horse, and what size and classes i would do?

thanks alot! have a nice day with your ponies :)

if you are quite slender (hate "skinny") how about looking to the classes where you need to be truly elegant such as Hack or Large Riding Horse - or ROR though TBs do fatten up somewhat. I don't agree that hunters would be too much - if you look at pictures of Katie Jerram or Louise Best, they are not exactly large and they seem to specialise in hunter types.

As you are 16 you can still do various age classes so why not get something really versatile that you can do lots with, a riding horse could also do intermediate classes or a small hunter would also have several classes it could do.
I would, if I were you, look for a super 15.2 that could do small RH/ hunters and all intermediates.

A friend of mine has a lovely TBx Welsh that she bought from auction as a colt he competes at really high level as a small riding horse

The other things you could look at are intermediates for now or ladies Hunters

Take a good luck on horse quest to get an idea of breeding

well as you can do intermediates until you are 25 i would look for something that could do those classes so small riding horses, hacks or hunters. On any of these you would need to get a height cert.

If you went for an ex racer you could of course go and do the ROR but it can be tough to find one that will make it to the top in the rh or hacks.

If you went for something that had welsh or arab in it (or even better) then you could also do the part bred classes.

If you like your mw hunter then go for a small hunter as these are a scaled down version of a MW.

I don't think you would look over-horsed on a MW, but as you're slim it might not show off how true to type they are (16.2hh-16.3hh, capable of carrying up to 14 stone for a full days hunting, with around 9 inches of bone), but a LW hunter (16hh-16.2hh, capable of carrying up to 12 stone, TBx types with around 8.5 inches of bone) may suit you? As you're tall, you my look too 'long' for a small hunter which are only up to 15.2hh, depending on how tall you are. A LW hunter would look lovely and elegant with a slim rider (I am leaning more towards being in 'show condition', myself, so I'm hoping my 3 year old is going to make a nice 16.3hh stamp of a MW!) x

Do you ever take your show ponies to lessons / clinics with any of the producers? If so then they should be able to help you and in my experience are always very willing to help encourage people. I'm in agreement with those posters that are suggesting something you can show in intermediate classes as well, either a small riding horse or hack that can do ISRT, or a small hunter (and some small riding horses) that can do ISHT. Find a part bred too and that's a third class for you.
