i went to watch my friends at a local show today and i'm really wanting to take my boy next time. they hve fun classes such as most handsome gelding, etc so nothing too serious. what would i need to wear? i learnt a lot by watching today. i think i will start with some in-hand classes first to give me confidence. i will hve to ride him down, so he will be in his dutch gag, altho i saw several ponies wearing them for inhand, and even lead rein classes. i dont want to spend a fortune on clothes as i will only ever do this show 2 or 3 times a year as i dont hve transport. any tips greatly appreciated as i've never shown my own pony and its been at least 20 yrs since i did anything at all!

If you don't want to spend a fortune, i'd say ebay :D i got a nice black show jacket on there for £9, so def wprth a try! :D good luck!

thx, having a look now. so it doesnt matter what colour jacket/shirt/tie then? and would my mark todd winter boots be ok. they are quite chunk, but i cudnt ride in jodhpur boots and chaps, i feel all floppy when i do!!

I used to hack to my local show with a dutch gag but took a snaffle in my pocket for the in hand classes. You really shouldn't show in a dutch gag even if other people do! ;)

Clothing wise (ideally) : tweed jacket, beigey trousers, brown boots. Hat. Brown gloves. Cream shirt or similar and tie.

Pony should have plainish brown bridle - are you plaiting or not?

Black is not good for showing...tweed or navy jacket depending on the type of horse/pony you are showing. If you are doing in hand jodhpurs and boots is not really correct either. You are much better having a pair of trousers in contrasting colour to your horses legs. A Gag is really a no-no for showing too, to be correct you should have a snaffle for novice classes and a pelham or double bridle for the rest. But little shows you see all kinds of turnout, right and wrong, if you are just doing classes such as handsome gelding you could probably get away with most things as long as you are smart :)

ok, so i've bought a white short sleeve shirt and navy tie. and am bidding on a greyish tweed jacket. my friend was borrowing my beige jodhs for her daughter, which she's now outgrown, so i'll hve those back, so i guess i'm sorted! i'm so excited, i hve butterflies already and the show is 3 months away!!!!

not sure what to do with his mane and tail. havent plaited for yrs. so will hve to practice like mad to get them perfect. i know he'd look super plaited, i hve a pic of him with his last owner plaited. but his mane is quite thick and falls both sides if left natural. so what shud i do? and what about his tail? it was pulled when i got him, but as he lives out 24/7 i let it grow. there is enough there now to plait it. if i plait one, shud i plait the other??

White shirt is fine for local level; though most people wear coloured. If you want to change it, pop to tesco and buy the cheapest yellow dusters you can find. Pop them in the washing machine with the shirt and you'll have a yellow shirt by the end of it :)

Unless he is a purebred m&m, he will need to have his mane plaited. Lots of practise! Ideally you should pull his tail as it looks more professional, but again for local level a smart tail plait will be fine :)
