So, I keep reading differing things but what I think I get is black used to be in but now people are preferring and leaning to clear hooves?

That's always judges perogative on every aspect of your horse, thats showing ;)
To me as long as you stick to the society rules you learn which judge likes what, I have never been marked down for feet colour........

most classes its normal to have clear hoof varnish or natural hoof oil

Most show hunter ponies, cobs and show hunters I see have black hooves as do a lot of the plaited coloureds but it definitely goes in fashions in certain classes round here

Personally I think it looks naff but clearly a kit of judges and competitors dont agree!

Like with many things in showing (such as the black v brown tack argument and knots in kids reins) there is a choice that is always acceptable, why risk trying to find the small percentage who love black hooves?

Yes this is it with showing, it's all up to personal preference. I'm new to showing so not sure what each judge likes (can I email them questionnaires, hehe) So long story short, go clear?

Depends on which class.
For m&ms and coloureds it is against the society rules to put black on though some people do and seem to get away with it
