Showing Cobs. Pics included.

Hi there.

We have recently purchased a 15.2hh Coloured Cob mare. We are hoping to bring her on some and then start showing her. I have never done showing so am very 'green' on the matter. :D

People with experience in showing cobs... what do you think of her? And what would we show her in? I am looking for honest opinions.. I will not be offended if people don't think she would excel. She's a happy hack for my mum so if I can't show her... it's not the end of the world :P

She's really pretty and looks very sweet, but if you want to show her as a ridden show cob she is over height (15.1h is the upper limit). I'm no expert in traditional/coloured cob classes, but I do judge hunters, etc. and would say that her hind leg and croup are problematic (too straight and the stifle angle is poor). Perhaps someone with more expertise in the traditional cob area can help you?
 
depends at what level local you could do ridden cob and coloured classes, if you want to do county level they need to be 15.1 with a height certificate or they can be classed as a maxi cob but she will look tiny in a ring with maxi cobs as they are huge, I would start off doing some at local level and see how you go, she would not look out of place at a local show she is nicely marked I like her black tail with the white mane.

Okay. I will get my vet to check her height :) I don't want to go beat the world with her... just some rosettes and fun!
 
No one has mentioned that if you want to show her as a cob at county level the mane and feathers will have to come off they are shown trimmed to within an inch of their lives, not sure if that is in your plans, she does not have a great hind leg so I would leave her as a traditional for now and have fun at local level rather than worry about her height and see how she develops as she matures.
 
you could go one of two ways

1) Show as a coloured traditional so leave her as she is, there are coloured classes at most local shows and plenty of people in the same boat showing their fun traditionals

2) Show her as a show cob, hog and trim her up, there aren't so many dedicated show cob classes at lower levels (although obviously you could still show in the coloured classes) they have to be very neat looking so you need to keep on top of the trimming, people showing show cobs tend to be a slightly more serious lot as opposed to coloureds which has a more varied group of followers

Personally I would err on the side of caution and leave her as she is until you have been to a few shows and had some judge feedback
 
Thank you for your reply WelshD. I think we will be doing some local coloured classes then. I'm not prepared to trim her as I'm not planning on being quite that serious about it haha.

She is gorgeous and nice markings, stick to unaffiliated showing, do some coloured classes and if she has a jump in her perhaps WH? You could do a variety of classes even family horse etc without having to trim her beautiful hair!
 
She looks like a poppet and I'm sure you'll have lots of fun with her. Re showing I would definitely be showing her as a traditional coloured and that gives you lots of classes both inhand and ridden. I wouldn't hog and trim her out as I would suspect that her bone wouldn't be of sufficient "quality" under all that lovely hair and overall she isn't a show cob she's a traditional so leave the hair alone.

As a coloured traditional you've got loads of coloured classes to go at, if you want to up the ante a bit look for some CHAPS or BSPA qualifiers a lot of these are held at local shows and depending on how she moves and performs you may well qualify for the Champs which are always a good weekend away. You've also got The Gypsy Cob Association and they have a championship show (TOYS) which again is good fun. Have a look at the CHAPS website as a starting point.

There is a massive number of coloured traditionals out and about and having owned a few in my time we've always had an absolute ball with them both showing and pretty much everything and anything else.

if you just do local she won't need a height certificate just enter and go, it's only if you register her with the showing society they require one, I think your right to leave the mane and feathers on I am sure she will do just fine, I don't envy you having to wash all that lot for a show though:)
 
I think she's gorgeous! I have a traditional cob and although his passport says 15hh we think he is more like 15.2 but have never had any problems out local showing! Local showing is pretty laid back so it's best to go have a go and see what judges think of her, I do coloured classes and cob classes mainly with my boy but local there's prettiest mare st conditioned as well to have a go at which she would probably do well in! Have fun!

She isn't really of a standard to do well at County level, apart from anything else they like them to be evenly marked but I bet she will do well at local shows. You can put her in anything from Best Mane and Tail, through Family Horse to Coloured classes, very few local shows have dedicated Cob classes, anyway. Does she drive?
