Showing donkys.

Sorry I cant answer your question,I just wanted to say how lucky you are to have a donkey,I have always wanted one.Good luck with your show.Do you drive or ride him/her?

respectedpony, driver. I always wanted a donkey too so when i saw Olaf on the World Horse Welfare site i had to get him. He was just 10months at the time he's 18 months now. I driver ponies so will break him to drive when he's old enough. For now he's just going in the Local Agricultural show for fun.

My friend breeds Donkeys small time in the New Forest and shows them a little :D I'm sure she doesn't do anything special other than bath them :)

Yes, I have shown donkeys in the past in Ireland, I think it is important to have all of the old coat removed. This can be a very slow process in donkeys who are often just totally bare for the month of August only. You can help this by regular worming and grooming long before the show. I have trimmed ear hair and lots of irregular hair, donkeys adore this attention. Farriery needs to be top notch and lots of leading preparation as it can be embarrassing to be in charge of a distracted donkey in the show ring. They can be difficult to teach to trot up but it is worth the effort and you will get lots of attention from little kids from the moment you unload from the trailer. I would always show in a bridle, for control reasons. Hope this is some help, good luck and enjoy yourself.
