Hi guys,

I wonder if you could help me! -I'm new to this showing business - so everyone is going to know loads more about this than me - bit of a showing amateur!!

Got my horse, a supposedly PBarab entered in in-hand and a ridden class on saturday and i'm a little confused what to wear!!

For ridden - me:

Blue velvet hat, flesh harness
Black gloves and black show cane
Blue dressage jacket
Beige johds
Long black leather boots
Light blue shirt, blue lilac and silver tie and tie pin

For jazz (horse) -
Black bridle with coloured browband
Pelham, 2 reins one plain one plaited with lipstrap
Black numnah
Black gp saddle
Black girth

Does this sound ok? i know technically that for showing my tack should be brown - but its only one show!!

Then for in hand can she wear her normal bridle, with a snaffle? Or should i keep her pelham in? Then should i keep her coloured browband on for inhand?

For me in the inhand, would dark grey smart trousers be ok? And on my feet? I can run best in my dubarrys - but are these too casual? Or black johdpur boots - then shirt and tie (and jacket?!)

Can i use my bendy stirrups or is this a no no?!

Finally, what to do with jazz's mane - i know technically PBA's should be pulled and plaited - but jazz is, infact a full arab - but they wont register her as a pure bred because her mother wasn't registered, but her dad, Sky Bandolier was

So i thought that you should turn them out in a way that was truest to the type of horse represented? Anyway, I've decided not to pull her mane - just to give it a bit of a trim - its only one show then I'm off to uni so there seems little point pulling it!

Finally, it says the class will be judged as a riding horse class - so do i do an idividual show, the judge rides or both?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Here's the little madam...

As far as your turnout goes, sounds fine, apart from the black gloves and black cane. They should be brown, no matter what colour your bridle and saddle are.

As far as plaiting is concerned, that is more tricky and I really haven't a clue. If the class is ONLY for PBs and everything else is plaited, then I would think that you ought to plait.

Wear your jod boots for the in hand - will look smarter than Dubarrys.

If it is a true riding horse class, then the judge will ride.

It would look better with straight stirrups and not bendy ones. You don't really see them in the show ring.

Keep her double/pelham on for the in hand class.

I've only picked out bits of your post and hope that they are of some help!

Im definatly no expert but my daughters do a lot of showing at their riding club and always do well so I can tell you what they do if that helps! Your tack is fine but don't have a numnah, it looks smater I think, pelham with two reins, and if you can, try and get a small buttonhole to match your browband. My girls just use a snaffle bridle with a diamonte browband for in hand and they wear the same for the ridden classes inc riding hat and carry a cane.I would definatly plait up the mane,( we cant plait his tail cus he rubs it at the top)so it's pulled. Bendy stirrups are fine and black girth. You just walk trot and prehaps canter round together then do a show in front of the judge by yourself ours does'nt get ridden by judge, think they do at county level tho , hope this has helped and best of luck

everything sounds fine except arent arabs supposed to have a running plait if in an arab class. If riding horse class or something along those lines just plait up golf ball style. Also am i being silly or do i see a little feather?? If so chop chop!!

and NO BENDY STIRRUPS!!
keep coloured browband for inhand i should think hmmm are they arab classes your doing??
i mosly agree with FMM althogh i think black cnae and gloves will be fine for just one show.Individual show definately and if at county or higher judge will ride. in individual show keep it short and sweet-- judges reallllly appreciate it!!! Dont forget to smile and politeness is KEY!! No over taking in front of the judge and if oyu do have to over take circle behind yourslef or make sure you dont upset anyone else. Having a steady pony it is really irratating when peole canter up ur a*se and zoom past. Any thing else just ask!!
Good Luck!!

yes they definately will be golf balls! The ones i tried there were only on her thin bit of mane! Shes got quite a short neck so do you think i could do lots of smaller ones?!

i like my bendy stirrups! Ah well - just one ride without them!

And it doesn't matter for inhand whether i use a snaffle or a pelahm and 2 reins - might have more control in pelham!

Thank you so much! xx

PBAs are always plaited (golf ball style) so you have to really... btw there is no such thing as an 'Arab Plait' as Purebreds should never be plaited under any circumstances so never let anyone talk you into this sort of plait for showing as it cold mean you being sent out of the ring! Arab judges are very particular!

What show are you doing? Just to warn you the judge will more than likely ask you why a Purebred is entered in a PBA class - if I were you I would call up the secretary and ask him/her or ask as soon as you get to the show.... once you've explained the situation the judge may prefer you to show her unplaited.

The rest of your turnout is fine - alot of producers show arabs in black tack, especially greys and although not 'correct', like coloured browbands, everyone does it and the judges usually turn a blind eye.

It's up to you about the bendy stirrups! I show in them and even had one judge comment that she loves riding in these (and it was at a County show) so go with whatever you are comfortable with!

You should prepare an individual show - if it's an affiliated Arab show the judge will ride 90% of the time, however, at E&O recently the judge decided not to due to distractions outside of the ring and made everyone do an individual show, so be prepared (simple walk, trot, canter figure of 8). You should also include a gallop if they haven't asked you to Gallop as a group. Then of course if you win and get through to the Championship you will be asked to do an individual show.

Good luck - would love to see pictures!!

Ok, the person at the arab horse society told me that as she was registered as a PBA i had to show her as one..., so,

would it work if i plaited her for the inhand then asked the judge if it was ok to show her in the ridden unplaited if she preferred?

Arab plait sounds too complicated for me anyway!

I won't get told off for my bendy stirrups? hmm mixed messages! The only thing is my knees dont really work without them!

I've got a simple show sorted, walk trot, canter on both reins?
I'll call the secretary - dont want to be sent out!

Thanks so much! xx
I'm not intending to win... just for fun!

I thought arabs were to have a running/french plait, I am not sure about part bred arabs but i think the same rule would apply. I was at the CHAPS champs at the weekend and thr part bred arabs shown in hand had their mane loose althougth it does say in the rule book they should have a running plait!

top horse pure bred arabs are always shown with flowing mane and tail. Arab plait is a misnomer as its never supposed to be put on an arab.
part breds are turned out to type so always plaited but browband depends on how heavy they are.

It doesnt say in the chaps rule book that they should be shown with an arab plait, it says plaited and that arab plaits are acceptable but to be honest you never see them
