Hello - I'm 'new' to breeding and wanted to ask some advice...

I bought a lovely ISH mare in March, who got fatter and fatter this summer and then surprised me 2 weeks ago with a gorgeous, jet black filly foal!

I've since tracked down the stallion in question - a young 'man' with Hibiskus bloodlines.

I know nothing at all about breeding / bringing up foals, having not intended to become a grandma! But, with a massive amount of reading and lots of worrying so far, everything seems to be going well and filly and mum are thriving.

I've been wondering about showing them next year, and wondered if anyone could offer me some advice as to how to prepare them / what to expect / what the form is? (I've only really evented before so don't know where to start) - or is there a good book you can recommend?

I'm probably getting ahead of myself, but I'm grabbing my surprise opportunity with both hands (rather than just panic!) and hoping to produce her for myself for the future...

If I can work out how to add pictures, I will...!

Very many thanks

Jenny

Unfortunatly you wouldnt be able to show your foal in foal classes next year as she will be classified as a yearling. And in yearling classes is going to look quite immature against other yearlings.
So I would say best to leave her till the following year and give her chance to catch up.

Was the sire a Trakehner then? Hibiskus is a very popular sire over in Germany and produces a lot of nice riding horses

Thanks! Maybe I'll just take her along for a mooch and a wander around then - she seems very bold / calm like her mum & I really want to capitalise on that and make the most of mum's influence! If she's bored by flags/pa systems/other horses/tractors etc then my job will be easier when it comes to the riding bit in a few years!!

Her sire is pure trakehner - Pentagon - a 3 y-o brought over from Germany by a friend of mine who was going to cut him and train him for dressage (he has amazing bloodlines inc. Hibiskus but didn't sell in Germany as he has a slightly upright hoof & only 1 descended testicle) - as my foal seems to have turned out beautifully she is considering keeping him whole to breed from herself.

I just want to give her the best start in life.

Well as far as registering your foal goes, you will be able to register her as a part bred Trakehner. They will give part bred papers even if the stallion isnt graded.

Looking forward to seeing some photos of her

What a lovely surprise, your baby is gorgeous. I intend to show my filly next year too. She was born small and thin and weak in late June 3 weeks late but looks fab now.

Not shown in hand for over 20 years!!!!!

I've been wondering that too - its probably about 50/50 as its both mum & dad's first foal and dad is jet black (mum is obviously grey!)

I guess I'm just waiting to see what happens - as much as I would like her to stay black, I'm just chuffed to bits that she's so healthy!

Well done she looks lovely.
I would once weaned just take her out to a few local shows so she gets the education dont be too worried if she is top or bottom of the line as you know she wont be overly mature by then and as Volatis suggests wait a year then take her out properly, although again two year olds in my opinion are difficult to show well against three year olds, so look for her out as a well educated three year old to reap the benefits!!!!

Good luck with her!!!
