Is a terrible idea 🤣🙈 however, I have somewhat rashly entered Cheshire show with the not so baby Beryl. As we’ve only played at showing so far but Cheshire is a more serious show I thought I should try and get a bit more correct.

So should the discreet numnah match her or the saddle? Saddle is havana but I do use shims with it, what would be the best that I can order before Cheshire? I have been using a very slim line white numnah, but the showing sheepskin ones all seem to come in brown?

Also white girth or dark? Looking at pictures I’m seeing bays with white and greys with dark. What is this madness? I always thought it was a no no as it would cut the horse in half somewhat? Am I very out of the loop?

Plus final question for the showing gurus out there, will the novice riding horse class have a ride judge? If so will they be kind as it’s a novice class 🙈.

Picture as payment.

Do you have the schedule, that will tell you under which rules the judging will be done and that will be a start to advise on turn out.

Under the British Show Horse Association , I’ve entered on a day ticket. Class states:

I’ve entered the part bred Arab class too but I’m more familiar with that side.

Here you go. Doesn't matter that your lovely girl is a grey. All riding horses are turned out the same, just choose a browband that compliments her and matches your tie. Make sure your bridle is neat but not too fine and avoid boots with shaped tops. You need to get her tail much shorter, tidy those ankles up and do a lovely job on the plaits to show off her lovely front. Numnah needs to be discreet (no fluff on show !) I can't see what colour her feet are, they look white ? use clear hoof polish.
Enjoy and good luck

Super thanks all! I'll go for a pad to match her tack then, that's much simpler than trying to match her, would you say brown girth too then, or white I have both?

I am loath to cut off too much tail for one show but I wills shorten it, she's unlikely to be up in the placings with a splint on a front leg and the numerous cuts she's covered herself in! She is clearly not wanting to be a show horse for a career.

Good luck and have fun 🤩 your horse is lovely 🥰 I don’t know if it’s still a thing but years ago plaits with bands got marked down as they said they should be sewed in with needle and matching cotton to the colour of the mane ?

Brown girth. You use a white girth if a hack but not riding horse.

Have lots of fun and report obviously needed.

Ah that might be it then as I was looking through pictures and I think the section starts with the hacks, though I still don't like it, very grating on a dark bay to have a white line through it, what's the reason for the hacks?

White actually does look neat on her, but I'll stick with my brown one!

Attendance will be based on her not injuring herself any more and us being able to get out to a practise party before hand...

Sewn or banded will depend on the sass pots mood on the day most likely, though she is much more amenable these days. I am actually not a bad plaiter and can make even bands look ok, but have needle and thread in so that will be the aim.

This reminds me that back when I was showing appaloosas in hand I had two that I carefully matched cotton to their mane colour. Tinsel silver and beige pink. Amazing I can remember this as it was back in the 70's.

I don't know re the white girths on hacks and as you say it can cut the outline into two. A lot of people will use brown girths on their hacks. I had a grey hack and even with him often used a brown girth as he was flecked in his colouring.

Good luck again

I've been told by people who should know that bands are ok - although I imagine it would still be one that if you can do either, you'd go for sewing.

As you were all kind enough to offer your wisdom, I though I'd write a report on both shows we ended up doing!

First up Caerwys Show Agri Show, I may have started the day saying I wasn’t going as I woke up to thunder and rain
🤣
🙈
. However the forecast was looking ok for the rest of the day so I manned up and went! Arrived just in time for the ridden part bred Arabs. 1/1, the true definition of you’ve got to be in it to win it
😜
.

Short break then back out for the Open Novice Riding horse (no I don’t know what open novice is, but figured it covered all bases). Two of us for this one and a pretty spooky ring with god knows what going on behind the hedge, think it was Punch and Judy at one point
🤣
. However, in true Beryl style she pulled her socks up and did a very sweet show to take the win and the championship for the section
🙌🏻
.

Hung about for the open ridden showing championship as figured it would be good experience for her. Beryl did think she’d really done enough, but in we went and she kept the sass in check enough for reserve champion
🥺
🤩
🙌🏻
(there were more than two as well
🤪
).

Next up Cheshire!
Managed to some how drive pretty much straight in no queuing, not sure how I managed it or if it will ever happen again but it did mean I didn't miss any classes this year!

First Novice Riding Horse, and our first ever ride judge. She initially went in the ring, went omg
😳
and got a touch of stage fright
🙈
so we may have bounced in and not walked… the heavy weight hunters doing their gallop in the next ring also did not help
🤣
, poor Beryl thought they were going to run her over I think. However, she settled and then gave the ride judge a super ride, enough to move us up a placing after the initial pull in to finish 6/7 (my friend said I can’t say 6/13 as the others were no shows
😆
🤪
). Plus the conformation judge said she was the one she’d most like to take home
💕
.

Then a nice break back at the trailer, whilst Beryl got some recovery mash, which she says is a hit but did get it everywhere
🤣
🙈
. Finally the part bred Arab mare class, only two of us forward but she only went and bloody won
🙌🏻
.

Turnout could have been more polished but as she won't be out campaigning for HOYs or anything I think we were 'neat enough'. Was shocked at the low numbers though and at how many enter but then don't turn up! Beryl is having a few days off in the field now, though I still think clouds of chalk are coming off her when she shakes 🤣.

Fair, they may have it though anyway 🤷‍♀️
I know some of the classes it's cheaper to enter than pay two tickets in (assuming they don't also smuggle folk in the living)

Brilliant. Big atmosphere. A lot of people enter and if already qualified don’t go or if they are a producer with lots of horses they may keep their options open. Fortunately the big shows don’t seem to close quite so early now but when I was on the county show circuit you’d be entering 2 or 3 months in advance. I can remember being very very frustrated that hadn’t entered one particular show as I couldn’t go and then as it transpired the yard my horse was at were taking horses to that show no entries forward in the qualifier my horse would have done. They had space on their lorry but no way to do a late entry.

You look very smart and lovely judge comments. Congratulations on the win and definitely 6/13 in the other. It’s a huge atmosphere for horses to go nicely for a ride judge so you’ve obviously done a good job.

And yes I’m always eek if there’s cobs or hunters next to us if they may be doing their gallop just as the judge is riding my horse and for him not remember he was a racehorse and would like to join in. 😁😁😁

She just seems to shine at the bigger shows! I was so proud of her with the ride judge, she’s had very few people ride her really but just said yep ok let’s go 💕.

Even more bonkers is the village show happening tomorrow is pre entries only, none on the day! Not that Beryl is going, all the big shows she’s now done and it was Llandyrnog show last year she freaked out at 🤣🙈.

That’s why we love them

She’s so funny, the more horses (so long as they don’t come to close for the sass mare stare to come out 🙈) and the more to look at and see the better she goes!

I’m not currently doing well at not doing showing as despite her self harm tendencies she’s definitely got the temperament for it!
