Are you sitting comfortably?

I have a Highland pony on loan with a view to taking him out to a few shows. He has shown fairly successfully in hand and is now progressing to a level where he could do ridden showing to quite a reasonable level. While I can help with his production, whether I can ride him at a show is always questionable, debating on how creaky my hips are on any given day, so I would need to find a rider for each class.

So, the NPS insist that the owner of the pony must be a full showing member of the society for ridden classes, could that be me or do I have to go back to owner and persuade them to join if they haven't done so? Then it appears that the rider too must be a full showing member is they should have their membership to produce in the ring, and that is in addition to the £45 or so each class at major shows will cost to enter.

Have I got that right, before I go off and spend loads of money? How do producers of show horses for other people get around this or are other show societies less scrupulous on society membership.

I'm not a professional producer by any means, it is just a hobby, so I don't want to spend any more than is absolutely essential

As far as i'm aware that is just the way it goes and there is no way around it.

The SHP that we compete BSPS is the same, the owner must be a member, then the horse, then the jockey.

For some shows you only have to become a member of the society if you qualify, why not go for those ones to begin with.

I think PUK have something in their rules that allows "loaners" to act as the owner - your best bet would be to contact NPS to check. But yes, there will be two lots of membership to pay if you're not the rider - I'm so pleased I own my ride/ride my own - so much cheaper (and simpler!)

It depends on the owner really, if they are happy for you to register the horse as yours, then go for it!

I registered my little TB that I had on loan with BSJA, I said I was the owner or his actual owner would have had to become a member too.

I am not sure about the NPS, but with other societies they allow the loanee to act as the "owner". Probably worth giving them a call. Depending on what shows you want to do would P(UK) or BSPS be a better choice?

trouble is, they are all horribly expensive, so it is worth working out which shows you can do without having to be a member.

im sure the NPs allows you to compete in many shows without actualy being a member. i competed my highland pony on the scottish NPS circuit and he was never registered with the NPS neither was i a member. its worth getting afew schedules of the shows you want to go to and check the wording to see if you do have to join or not to take part. good luck!
