I'm hoping to try some showing this summer, my horse is 15hh and going to be 5 tomorrow. He's a coloured, and apparently a WB cross american paint. The obvious choice is therefore coloured classes, but last year a judge said he was too fine

I was only planning on showing at local level, as I have never done any before and he's very green, so I'm planning on giving coloured classes, riding horse and WH a go but I was wondering about affiliated showing since the 'anything goes' in unaffiliated seems to work against you as much as in your favour (does that make sense?) My feeling is that we're just not good enough and not 'right' for these classes. What do you think?

I haven't got any good recent ridden pictures, but here are some for an idea...

and a strange video but says more than photos I think

Also, what would I wear?? A navy hat is correct isn't it? Would a navy jacket or a tweed hacking jacket be better? sorry, I'm completely clueless!

Tweed definately, with a non-white shirt!!!!!

Look on the CHAPS and BSPA websites, they will tell you more about affiliated showing.

Affiliated coloured showing is a lot stricter in a sense, you will get marked down if your not dressed correctly, and the presentation of the horse matters a lot. Your horse is a non-native so would need to be plaited and trimmed, this means his tail needs to be either pulled or plaited as well. While unnafiliated showing doesnt really have any strict rules on this.

I show affiliated at county level in coloureds and I wear, beige jods, creamy-yellow shirt, red tie, long leather boots, green tweed jacket and a navy showing hat with leather harness.

Your horse looks fine, will he go in a pelham? At the end of the day showing is a great lesson for youngsters, having to go around in a group and also stand still for a while. Just have a go!! Most of the unnafiliated judges I have met are pretty clueless also!!!

If you have anymore questions PM me!!!

There are many sections within CHAPS and BSPA for all types of coloureds, so unless you are trying to enter him into a traditional hairy class, I can't see why a judge would say he was the wrong type!

For day time classes a tweed jacket with your navy hat would be correct. Long leather boots, shirt and tie, brown gloves. For some evening performances you will be allowed to wear a navy jacket and a top hat, with a stock.

As he is 15hh, he is an inbetween size, although at local level, you are pretty much free to do whatever you like. I would suggest ridden horse/pony (not show pony), ridden coloured (he is a great colour!), working hunter (could be in the horse or pony section depending on the split the show have given height wise), riding club type, show hunter (either horse or pony again depending on how the show has split the height).

You need to get him out and about a bit and see what the judges think. Remember, at local level the judges are often people who have never seen a good example of what they are judging! It is such a shame, as many panel judges are only too happy to go to their local show and judge and give people lots of good advice.

With regard to his tack - in the ridden horse/pony classes you should wear a workmanlike bridle with a coloured browband. In the hunter/working hunter classes you should have a plain bridle. Riding club you can wear whatever you prefer.

You don't have to show in a double or pelham, but many people in your classes probably will - however, if your horse goes best in a snaffle, don't rush to change this until you are both ready. He is still young and you both have plenty of time!
Good luck!

Thank you for all yopur replies and help.

Gingermare, I am 21, so at the moment my age shouldn't be a problem.

He has never been ridden in anything but a snaffle, at the moment he has a myler comfort snaffle and is starting to work in a nice outline, he's so laid back and willing that I think he will accept a double or pelham without too much trouble, but I don't want to try too soon and unsettle him (if thats possible with him!)

With regards to his height, on his passport he is 14.1hh, as measured this time last year, but now I have measured him (not properly) as 15hh, maybe 15.1hh, and not sure how much more he will grow if he can manage 4 inches in a year, so I think this will need updating!

Brown tack is correct, am I right? What sort of saddle is generally used for these classes?

he looks like a lovely horse with lovely colouring. i think you should probally take him out to a few local/unafilliated shows and see how he goes in that enviroment and see what judges think of him, although dont be put off as many judges at local/unafilliated events are completely cluless and have no real idea of what to look for!

Thank you. We're planning on giving the unaffiliated showing a go as soon as possible, quite looking forward to it. He doesn't change at all at shows, takes everything in his stride. Not looking forward to trying to plait and getting him clean tho, I've never known a horse as disgusting as him! He looks like a giant horse shaped poo!
