Hi, I went to Richmond Champ Show yesterday and was really suprised at how interesting it was. Can anyone explain how the point system works and what the abrieviations mean. How does a dog achieve show certificate of merit etc?

Thanks

Well as GSDs are a law unto themselves with regard to showing I can't really help much. The Show Certificate of Merit is awarded I think to dogs who win certain awards at all breed open shows, i.e. winning at a show for just GSDs wouldn't gain any points but if it was a show with classes for many different breeds then certain awards would gain points. Sorry not a lot of help there, there may be more info on the KC website.
Re abbreviations, which ones did you want to know about, the ones that come to mind are JW - junior warrant, which is awarded to a dog which has gained a certain number of points between the age of 6 and 18 month
CC - Challenge certificate (or of course Cave Canem) which is awarded to the best of each sex in a breed at a championship show. Three CCs mean a dog is a champion.
BOB - best of breed, BOS - Best opposite sex, BIS - best in show, RBIS - reserve best in show.
There are lots more , particularly related to gundogs which I will leave to the gundog folk to deal with.

JW is for younger dogs and a SCM for older dogs. The point system is rather complex even when you are collecting points its fairly confusing info on points collected can be found on the kc website here

Becoming a show champion is somewhat less complex, although definately not easy, your dog needs three challenge certifiicates awarded by three seperate judges to become a show champion.

Oh yes the difference in gundogs or some other working breeds....most breeds when becoming a show champion have the letter CH infront of their name. However in dual breeds this is a working champion qualification obtained through field trailing so gundogs and the like recieve ShCH infront for the show champion qualification.
Is that what you mean MM?? Or am I still half asleep?

Well you dress in a tracksuit, throw on some football studs, run round and round a sports pitch, yelling, whistling and throwing yellow footballs-on-ropes in the air and tripping people up...oh right, that's just us... :p :p :p :o

If showing involved any of the above for me CC...I wouldnt be doing it! :D You can keep sprinting round footie pitches thanks :D

^^^^^^^ if there was a like button i'd of pressed it by now! :) i also love the companion shows, sometimes you don't have to do anything to get a rosette! Luckily i don't just do those though!
