i wouldn't worry to much as long as your smart and clean for a local show. Be careful with your doulble bridle if your horse is not used to and u. just enjoy yourself!

She has had a double bridle before and works lovely with it .

I sold the bridle a year ago as it was mine when I sold my last horse .

If you are doing a riding horse class then you should have a coloured browband. For hunter classes a plain one.

I would wear a tweed hacking jacket and stock or tie with tie pin.

A plain hat with a hairnet and brown/dark coloured gloves. Beige/canary jodhs/breeches and long leather boots.

If your horse has a chunky head then a chunky bridle and noseband will suit. More of a finer head requires finer tack. Ideally brown tack is best, but for a local show I can't see it would matter. No numnah under saddle.

Pulled tail (if poss) for hunter classes.

Make sure you have the curb and lip strap correctly fitted and present too......

Have fun!!

It's really difficult to tell from those photos, but she does look like a hunter type, so a heavier weight bridle (with flat noseband and browband) would be most suitable.

Tweed jacket, beige/canary jods and shirt and coloured tie are the essentials (a stock isn't suitable for showing). A blue hat and black long boots are preferable, as are brown gloves and a brown whip or cane if you use one. Black tack is fine, and becoming more acceptable at all levels of showing. If you want to use a numnah, that's fine as long as it's the same colour as your saddle and fits discretely (not showing much under the saddle). If you've got long hair, it should be in a bun with hairnet, or neat and tidy if it's short.

One good tip is to use a piece of thin elastic or plaiting thread as number string, rather than the shiney white or black string they give you. It really smartens you up.

There are some very useful pieces of advice, above, so go for it, girl!
Don't over-do the baby oil and you could round off the corners of your number with a pair of scissors.

Do let us know how you get on, please!!!

Oh, nearly forgot, even at some small local shows, the Judge may ride the exhibits, instead of you doing an individual show. Check in the schedule - it may say something in there.

Good Luck!!!

Thanks for that, was thinking the flat noseband but I always like to make sure that its right, my motto is if you are going to do something then do it proper .

Its black tack she has , as she is not my horse , Im just gona have to work with what I have , Gona ebay for a tweed jacket .

As far as numbers goes I doubt they do numbers , they have never done before so cant see them starting this year but good tip for balmoral though , as hubbie has to wear it for the yearling class .

Lots and lots of shampooing as she is grey , her dapples come up lovely though .

So it is true then - they don't do numbers at local shows in N. Ireland!!

I went to stay with Tony McCoy's family about five years ago, near Ballymeena, and his Dad, knowing that I loved going to shows, took me to watch one about half an hour's drive away. He dropped me off and said I was to ring him when I was ready to come home.

There were a few ponies around by about ten o'clock and I asked the sec. if they had a spare schedule. 'Schedule? We don't use schedules', she exclaimed. Neither did they use numbers. Nobody seemed to know what the classes were, they just went in all of them.

Everyone was there to enjoy themselves, have fun with their ponies and not once did I hear anyone complaining about anything. Refreshments were rather sparse so I was glad when my lift arrived to take me home.

All this, incidentally, held in a field bright yellow with ragwort - reason being - it's not poisonous when it's growing!!! Now that IS an Irish answer. I had a lovely day going 'back in time' to how I remember shows 50 years ago.
