Showing in Hand - what to wear?

Hi

I'm thinking of showing my 2 yr old M&M in hand. He's a grey.

I was thinking of wearing black trousers, shirt, jacket.

What colour jacket should I wear, is it acceptable to wear black trouser + black jacket or is that too much black?

Should I wear a hat?

What shoes should I wear?

Should i wear a tie?

Ideally your turn out should be the following:

A hat - This is essential as it's traditionally considered rude to the judge to not wear one. You have lots of options. The most common is the soft type like a flat cap, stetson or trilby. A beagler is another option, and a hard hat with straps is also allowed if you're worried that your youngster might play up a bit. Colour wise, it's just a case of finding something that tones in with your outfit.

Shirt - Look for something in a pale/pastal colour, or a white/colour stripe. Avoid plain white.

Tie - any kind is permissible, but pattern tends to be better. Tone in with your shirt and jacket.

Jacket - ideally for m&ms this should really be a green, brown or mustard tweed rather than black. For local shows, however, black will be ok until you are sure you enjoy it. Another option is to just go for a waistcoat that tones in with your outfit.

Trousers - any kind that look relatively smart will do the job. If your pony is a white grey then go for a darker colour that tones in, such as navy or dark green. If he's a dapple with dark legs, however, try a lighter colour such as beige.

Shoes - Ones that tone in are great, but the most important thing is that you can run in them well, particularly if the arena might be slippy mud/grass!

Gloves and cane - don't forget to wear brown gloves and carry a brown show cane!

Obviously all this is ideal. Make do with what you have for now, and then build up your full outfit when you are sure you like the sport. At local level the judges will be much more forgiving of turnout.
