We recently aquired a shetland pony and my daughter is hoping to do some in hand showing. The pony is not registered so only local level mountain and moorland classes sadly. However she is coloured although minimally. Patch on shoulder on the off side and another under her mane on the same side. The other side has only a roan patch running down her leg, one stocking and 3 white socks. She is very pretty and unusual, but my question is how well is she likely to do in coloured classes with her minimum markings? We are new to this. Are judges looking for even both side markings?

My sister has a mini marked traditional and she does all the coloured classes with him and 9 times out of 10 she wins the class. He's got perfect conformation and great action so although at first he doesn't seem to get noticed as soon as he moves he's put straight to the top. Don't let the marking put you off if she's lovely in everyway you've got as good a chance as any! :D

For M&M classes, they won't be judging the markings because its coloured (unless it was a coloured class for Shetlands), it will be conformation and movement, a Shetland that is as close as it can be to the breed standard.

However in coloured classes, the should be looking for colour, quality of the colour and how evenly marked the markings are as well as everything else.
