I have just recently started competing my connemara pony showing. I thoroughly enjoy it and love showing her off, however I get incredibly nervous....

So much so to the point I actually vomited in the ring (tad embarrassing). 😁

This hasn't happened before and I think I have developed a worry about cantering in the go-round with the other horses.

Has anybody else overcome show nerves or dealt with a similar problem?

Thanks X

With any sort of competition it's important for you and horse to be confident doing whatever is going to be asked of you before going out in public. If it's the 'canter round' making you nervous - get a few mates together and practice at home until you're happy and horse is settled - or join a group lesson and ask if you can all go round together. Once you're confident that you are well able to go round and show your pony off you will be less nervous. Some nerves are good - but not so many that a sick-bag is required!

Why do you think most grooming kits at shows have "bottles of water" in them?! Others have very strong "apple juice".

Some people just use rescue remedy though.

Haha! Heard that one for going out hunting but I'm sure it'll have the desired effect for showing ;)

I have a friend's daughter who used to compete one of our SJ'ers and do pairs with my daughter when she was younger. She was notorious for either fainting or throwing up down pony's shoulder. Never stopped her competing though and she has turned into a fantastic rider as she has grown! I like the "apple juice" solution - but we found rescue remedy more effective for the children. (Not that I think you are a child OP!).

To be honest I have been competing for 40 years and the only thing that stops me vomiting in the ring is taking a travel sickness pill before riding!
