Hi, just wondering if there is a set way for attaching showing numbers to jackets. There is mention of a string, but I am curious on the make up of the number, is it paper, cardboard, or something else? Just thinking that paper would tear? Haven’t been showing before but have accessed answers to most of my questions online and on HHF, but can’t find anything on the make up if the number

They are usually cardboard with eyelet holes, string tied around the waist or arm and sometimes a bridle number too

Posh (expensive to enter) shows might have their card numbers laminated!

It's usually a rectangular piece of laminated card with a hole at each end. YOu can put string through the holes and tie it round your middle - and many shows will provide the string. However that does make the rider look rather an odd shape. If you pin the number to your jacket, it makes for a much smoother look.

A thin dark elastic is used by many, if it has loops on each end it goes round the waist and they pop neatly over a button on the jacket, one will last for ages, my old one is still lurking around in my showing kit.

I have never used safety pins, maybe that is a new thing but it will not work with the average thinnish card or paper on a wet or windy day, it is bad enough keeping them on with elastic run over the top and many do get trashed by the end of a class.

Ones pinned look awful! also nowhere to attach your rosettes!

99% of competitors will attach it with a string including most top professionals.
Numbers are normaly thin printed card. Round the corners off and then attach either with a thin piece of elastic the same colour as your jacket, or if you are like me and always lose the elastic then dark plaiting thread works just as well, Do NOT use the horrid stuff shows provide.
thread the string through the middle button hole of your jacket, tuck the knot through the button hole and it looks very neat.

I have a collection of coloured elastic. I have to remember to select the length else I end up with my son's sized one which isn't a good look! I seem to have lent out several bits over the years which rarely finds its way back into the tub.
