I'm sure you must get a bit fed up with these questions at this time of year but i would value your opinion! We have an 11.3 reg. welsh sec.A gelding that we would like to take to some local shows. I stress the local bit as he is certainly not a county level show pony!!! My daughter is 5. I know strictly speaking and at a higher level he should be left in his natural state but if i enter a general lead rein class is it ok to plait him up? My daughter has a brown tweed jacket (thanks to ebay!) and brown jod. boots. The pony is grey. Does this all sound o.k and would her black hat silk look silly. One last question... i have seen the schedule for a local show and the first class is lead rein pony. the 3rd class is M+M lead rein, which one should i do, bearing in mind that his mane is pulled. Thankyou so much for getting this far!!

Yes you can plait if you like, lots of people with section As plait and do show hunter pony lead rein, and your turnout sounds fine for that. If you can borrow/buy a blue hat silk it would be great, but you won't look out of place if you don't. Whether you do well will depend on the judge, as you'll be against the show pony types in the general lead rein class (especially as they have a separate class for m&m lead reins) You can also do the third class, but will have to be unplaited and prepared to possibly be penilised for not being totaly 'natural'. If it's just for fun, why not do both classes? Just unplait and straighten the mane as much as possible between classes. Most children don't care if they're first or last, they're just pleased to be in the ring and showing off their pony!

pulled manes are fine on a section A. If you realy want to plait then you can find section A's that look better as SHP's.
Jacket and boots sound fine. canary jods and a navy velvet hat silk would be fine. A black one wont look very stupid but you can get a navy velvet hat silk for very little money. oh and brown/dark coloured gloves, preferably leather but any that arnt wolly will do.

Also if the 1st class is the open pony and the 3rd class is the M&M, if you plait in the morning you can unplait before the M&M class and because youve plaited in the morning you wont get the perm effect, and do 2 classes, we used to do this with our little section B

Thankyou both so much for that advice! I'm thinking i may do both classes as we are only going to have some fun and give daughter and pony a good day out. We will have to hire the trailer for the day so may as well make a day of it! Will get a blue hat silk and gloves. He has a pink/purple velvet browband that my daughter loves. Is this ok to use? Have never done any showing before and don't want me or daughter to look silly. Talking of me, what on earth shall i wear? Will i need the full ensenble even for local showing? sorry for more questions!!

right i hate to tell you but no not realy, you might get away with the browband for the open class but for M&M's its a major nono.

As for you, Alot of local lead rein mums go for a tweed jacket and dark trousers or a skirt. A beagler or some form of hat (trilby etc) is a must. Other mums go for a smart blouse and skirt (with hat) or smart blouse and trousers. Most important is to look smart and if you plan on going higher then you can think about investing. However if you go on ebay sometimes you can find a full learein ensemble for very little money

Oh and dont forget the jodpur clips to keep the jods down.

Does she have a shirt and tie as well

She has a pony club tie and i was thinking of getting a cream shirt as white looks a bit bright in my opinion. gosh this is harder than it seems isn't it? Will add a plain brow band to ever extending shopping list! Have seen some lead rein outfits advertised on e-bay but most of them look more suited to county showing in my opinion .(but then again i really havn't got a clue!! jumping shows were all i went to as a child and certainly wasn't riding at such a young age!)

No! go for something nice and bright - there will be other colours in the tweed - maybe a bright yellow tie with a nice pattern perhaps - or perhaps red - depends on the type of tweed. But something bright, definitely not brown!

Its a good job i'm asking these questions as i clearly don't have a clue!!! Thanks for the much needed advice. Its a very boring (and cheap) brown and cream sort of small herringbone patterned jacket but i think a yellow would look nice. Next question(!) can you get ties for children or do you just buy a regular one?

Childrens ties are SOOOOOOOOOOO expensive. You may want to try to find something at one of the department stores in their children "wedding" sections. otherwise, it may be worth dismantling an adult tie. After all, it is only the top bit that is seen, and if you can do a nice tie (in miniature) then no one cares what the rest of it looks like! I think yellow would look lovely.

Gloves, don't forget little dinky gloves for her too.

I used to hate LR showing, I felt like I was getting dressed for a wedding, I just wore a really boring blue pleated skirt (make sure you can move in the thing if you choose to wear a skirt) and a navy and green fitted jacket, oh and a hat, are they still de rigeur? (FMM?) rolled my jeans up and wore tights and shoes(make sure they stay on and don't slip off, or give you blisters) though if it was raining, or the grass was long I wore my hunting boots! (I hasten to add that we only showed for fun and never ventured further than PC and RC shows) The browband was navy and green to match my clothes. My poor child used to be dressed and then placed on a mat (DO NOT MOVE!) and then she was plonked on the pony, Hubby spent ages bulling her boots and would never let her actually step on the ground in them.

Good Luck and Enjoy, that's the most important thing.
