This is going to sound like a really silly question, but I haven't had much to do with showing before! I want to take my Shetland to some in-hand showing classes so that he gets out and about, but some schedules say 'registered' ponies. He has a breed society passport, does this mean that he is registered? Or is there anything else I need to do? Thanks all :)

If it is a Shetland breed society passport and has his sire, dam and other generations listed then he is registered. he should have a "proper" name on the front page along with his breeders name, his registration number, his microchip number, date of birth and colour, his markings will also be inside.
I have not got one to give any more details but if you are still unsure EKW will probably be able to give you a definitive answer.

As BP says - if it is a red Shetland Stud Book Society passport then yes he is registered and eligible to compete. Check out the showing guidelines on the SPSBS webpage. One big NO NO is kneeling in the ring. Yes the ponies are small but it is a health and safety issue. Stallions and colts 2yo MUST be bitted and must have the appropriate bridle badge on. Mares and geldings are bitted at your discretion.

The shetland community is very friendly and welcoming so don't be afraid to ask for hints and tips at shows!

Thanks :) Yes he has got a proper Shetland stud book passport, along with a long list of generations, breeders etc. Good to know I can enter him in the registered classes if I want to :) I took him in a youngstock class at a local show once, and the only problem was stopping him eating the camera when he had his picture taken at the end- the photographer loved him, and he loved the taste of the camera strap :p hehehe
