Hi all,
Wondered if showing people can help me. My sharer is keen to take my horse in the local agricultural show. He is a 15.2 connemara x andalusian. She is 14. I know she can't take him in any pony classes due to his size. There aren't many horse classes though, so I thought the best would be a hunter class. There isn't even a best combination.
Could she do Open Hunter? Or Ladies Hunter? and what would they entail - I know it's not a working hunter, I've done that before.
Also, how would you present a connie x iberian for a hunter class? Should he be presented au naturale as in M & M or, as I present him for hunting and dressage, plaited up in a spanish plait? I'm not pulling his mane for anybody!!!!

Open hunter will be huge hunters over 16hh (average about 17hh) ladies hunter is side saddle. Do they have an Intermeidiate show hunter type or small hunters?turnout, part bred m&ms or maybe equitation?

For hunters they should be plaited with pulled and bandged tail with 3 lines over the rump and sharksteeth for quarter marks. Rider should have tweed, shirt (preferably not white) and tie with long boots and beige jods. Plain bridles with pelham or double.

As you said there aren't many horse classes, I am guessing there aren't any part bred Iberian or part bred M & M classes? Is there a riding club horse class or a best rider class? In terms of height he would be an intermediate type or small hunter. For show hunter or riding horse classes (doesn't matter for riding club/pony club horse classes so much) he should really be plaited traditionally i.e. with pulled mane and tail, not au naturel or spanish plait BUT I am with you on this - if you don't normally do these sorts of classes and he has a beautiful long mane then I am glad you are leaving it (do you have any pics?)

It is unlikely that with his breeding he is the traditional hunter horse stamp (although it is possible!!) but it would still be fun to do. He may also do better as a working hunter if he performs well. Ladies hunter classes are normally ridden sidesaddle at county level shows (although I believe nowadays they also do astride ladies' classes).

Thanks guys. None of those classes that we COULD do. It's not a very good show I don't think - there isn't an RC type class or riding horse, or small hunter or anything like that, or even a working hunter which my horse probably would do well at. Probably how they keep it so small. I don't know of any ladies who hunt sidesaddle round here either so not sure on that one.
Could they do tack and turnout a la M&M with natural hairdo?

Hunters don't have to have hunted let alone done it sideways, ladies classes are a very specific discipline and only really seen at affiliated shows which makes me think it might not be such a small show as you think.
 
Yes, they can do tack and turnout in natural state (based on most tack and turnout rules) :) Turn out as you would either an Iberian or a connemara (probably best to choose either Spanish or M&M style turn out and stick to it), then you/sharer can get his mane lovely and silky and clean tack to perfection and have a good chance!!

Quite often agricultural/county shows are of quite a high standard even if there are few horse classes (although obviously not always!) When is it? Let us know how you get on whatever you choose to do! Does your sharer have any other shows coming up?
