I would like to show my youngster in hand next Spring, but I was planning on him living out without a rug on over winter as much as possible. Will this mean that he will take longer to moult and potentially mean that his coat looks worse than others who are being rugged all winter?
In my mind, sure my colt's coat would be thicker, but would they not moult at the same rate regardless of coat thickness, as it is just replacing one coat with another?

Yes he will have a thicker coat that wont be as neat and as flat but if you give him a good groom/strapping everyday the coat will come out nicely when it should, if not a little earlier. Don't stress too much about it, there will be plenty in the same boat as you in the ring.
