I am going to attempt my first show on my ex eventer who people have been telling me for years to show. I have found a local ish show but need help choosing a class! I think he is a lightweight hunter, the show is Hambleton.

I ideally for his first show want a class that the judge doesn't ride, I think class 25 is this as no ride just is listed. Can anyone confirm that for me?!

Schedule: P13 http://www.hambletonshow.com/pdf/Hambleton_District_Show_Schedule_2012.pdf

just had a look at the schedule class 25 ridden hunter?

Classes 22 - 25 will not be ridden by the judge, you do an individual show, it states this under the section list, where it says about qualifying for P UK.

Another question... I don't want to invest in all kinds of new tack etc until I know he will enjoy and be good at it!

Will I get really marked down if I use my black event saddle and a dark brown double bridle with one of those fake double bits?! It is all I can find!!

It would be better if you had tack all the same colour and the saddle ideally should be a showing saddle. But it all depends on the judge what they like/dislike. Has anyone got a black bridle they could lend you?

Purists will say yes, you will get marked down ( and you possibly will do) BUT this is your first outing and I personally wouldn't worry about 'correct' tack, as long as it is clean and well maintained.

If a local show it should be fairly flexible and you will get a good idea of how your horse is going to get on. See if you can get the judge to give you feedback etc and use this and your general experience on the day as a guide to if you want to do more.

If you do want to do more then you should invest in a more straight cut saddle in the same colour as your bridle.

If a novice horse then it should be shown in a snaffle, not double (or 'fake' double) but at this level it really shouldn't matter that much, as long as you are clean, tidy etc.

Go and have some fun :)

I would keep the brown bridle and Rugby pelham?? just use the saddle you have if it fits well and use a very discrete numnah.
