(i know shes on the forehand, this was her first ridden affliated show and she was going down hill, im 5"1 and not exactly skinny lol)

I would say MW too (but Im a noob lol) and also, Riding Horse. Mind you from the HW's I saw on HCTV lately, they are a lot slimmer than the name suggests, but I believe a medium weight should carry 14stone happily.

LOL well shes carrying me ok! i think shes to heavy for a riding horse, shes done sports horse coloured and just hunter type classes at chaps shows and another affliated so far, and done really well, but im talking about county level.. so they start defining.. ideally id choose the class with the least competitors pmsl!

Defo not a riding horse!

I would go for MW hunter personally, in ladies hunters you tend to find mainly LW i think

I think she is too light in type for a HW, although I havent seen many HW.

Best bet MW

No? She looks the spit of one who won the riding horse class at my local show! But then that was only local - and Wales, so I suppose it depends on the standard of the competition!!!

Main problem at County will be her height - she looks a 'little' 16.2 if you get what I mean (unless you are about 6'6

).

Most show hunters at higher levels are about 17hh+.

Lovely mare though.

nah, my horse has just under 8 inches bone and he is more riding horse than LW
smile.gif

type wise, she looks more of a hunter personally
smile.gif

At county, I would go for MW

Ive showed at county level, did the MW hunter class, my mare is 16'1 and she wasnt the smallest in the class.

OP - i would say your horse is definately MW, not a riding horse though
smile.gif

Yep
smile.gif

Usually the more tb, the lighter the horse
smile.gif
8 inches is about right for a LW, anything under is usually a hack or riding horse
smile.gif

A hack has the least amount of bone, then the riding horse, then the hunters, LW to HW

Definately not a riding horse!

More MW than anything else in the weights. Traditionally ladies were the lightweights but these days ladies can be any of the three weights. There was a coloured heavyweight placed in the ladies at HOYS this year i think.

Heightwise also correct for ladies. I presume you already do coloured non native?

Ladies hunter is sideways!

I would say Lightweight, how much bone does he have?

Buck is 16.1 and looks tiny in the lightweights

I would say MW hunter, although she may be a bit on the smaller side (height). Ladies hunter is traditionally side saddle as far as I know, and usually lighter weight hunters anyway. Have fun

Sorry - reading that back it does sound a bit unclear! So to clarify

Traditionally a ladies hunter would be a lightweight hunter ridden sidesaddle, however over the last few years this is not always the case, you do get MW & HW is the ladies hunter classes.

Red Andes, ridden by Jane Webber is a HW ridden hunter (qualified for this class at HOYS 2009) also qualified for the ladies hunter and was placed 4th at HOYS 2009. This horse is also coloured and qualified and was placed in this class also.

I would try and find some photos to give you an idea.

Hope this helps

This website gives you a good guide as to the "type" required for hunter classes. Ours is 17.2hh and is still a lightweight, however, there is often much chunkier competition. I would say yours looks like a lightweight, but check how much bone he has, as it is all done on how much weight they are theoretically able to carry.....

Good Luck

very confusing on looks.. this one is under heavy weight but looks more like a mw/LW... how much does height play a part?

I would say the horse pictured looks like a m/w to me. (not that I'm an expert!) Looks to have a reasonable amount of bone.

I think middleweights are bigger than people imagine. I rode one for someone years ago at County level - he was 18hh with 11" of bone and did quite well. I think she will look small.....

Ditto! Mine is nearly 17.3hh...

To be honest, the reason why it is difficult to place your horse in the right category, is that she is not really a hunter type (at the moment) as far as county classifications go. Also, although there are often small horses (under 16.2) in the classes, it is rare (apart from Finn McCool/Cheyne Walk) for a smaller horse to do as well, simply because the larger horses are more eye catching.

If I were you I would stick to hunter type classes/coloured classes - you can do coloureds at county level and this is where she looks (to me) where she will do his best. She is a good colour. If you want to go to this level, you will need to pull her tail and trim it though - currently she is plaited at the front and has a traditional tail!

also, if you do go county (particularly hunter) you will need a navy hat with flesh coloured harness or a beagler. If you do coloured county, then you will still need a flesh coloured strap. but they are less fussy about colour and you can pretty much wear what you like.

She is still a baby, so she will mature even more this year and you may find she grows into herself more and will look more of a hunter than she does at the moment - she just needs a bit more top line and to look a bi "harder" if you know what I mean?

She looks a lovely type of horse and I am sure she will always do her best for you, whatever classes you decide to do! Many of the coloured judges are also hunter people - so ask their opinion when you do a class and see what they think. Sometimes photos are not the best thing to use when making a decision.

Red Andes did HWs last year and was placed in the ladies sidesaddle at HOYS. He is about 17.3 and a very solid horse. Much bigger than you realise as his conformation is so good, he does not look out of proportion. Red Andes was a MW the year before. He is still only 6 so is likely to change shape even more over the next year or two as he finally matures.

FMM. thank you for that reply, i totally agree with you about her topline etc, she is still very much growing/changing shape and in all honesty i think this year will be more about getting her out to the counties to get her overal ring experiance and the general getting her used to all the going ons, at the lower levels ie chaps shows etc she has done well in the hunter classes, but i apprciate that county is a level above.

The tail... is gone! and is already pulled, that show in the pics was last october and i knew i was turning her away after it so didnt want to remove to much of anything (it was plaited though).

thankyou again for your advice.. wasnt aware of hat colour! see this year is also a big learning curve for me too!

I meant to add (and forgot) that for adults in coloured and hunter classes, it is correct to wear spurs. These can be dummy spurs if you prefer, but you do need to wear them!

Glad to hear her tail is sorted - it will make her look much more level!

Have fun with her this year and see how you get on - you can at least do affiliated hunter classes on a day ticket so don't have to register until you are ready.

yep knew about spurs.. that could be fun shes pretty sharp off the leg as it is, she is overstamped/registered with chaps, bspa and the shb so we have plenty of other classes open to us aswell.

i was trawling through devon countys pics from last year.. local hunter classes and novice horse classes.. also looking at some of the pics, she doesnt look like she would be out of place in a large riding horse class.

will give the coloured classes a go, maybe in hand to see how she does but personally i find them far to open, and not always judged on a huge amount if that makes sence?

different, at the chaps shows as i know they use more of a scoring system, but from my experiance of coloured classes last year, affliated and county i wasnt to keen!

ment to add aswell..

im not to sure that ANY class that involves a ride judge is a good idea, ok so we have a few months prep and i try and get as many people as possible to ride her, but.... im not convinced madam is ready for somebody else to ride her at a show..

may get somebody else to do a ridden class at a lower level with her to see how she goes.. being that she is a 4 yr that has a mass amount of attitude and will tak ethe mick given half the chance!

(saying all this at home shes a monkey, last ridden show encounted a line up errupting as some plonker lobbed a ball for a dog, and a bolting pony in the ring next door with screaming child, all fine madam didnt turn an ear.. it was 2 people that stood at the ring side that got us! )
