I'm taking a fellow livery to a local showing show on Sunday so thought while i was at it i'd bung Sophie in the trailer and take her along as it's a new place for her to have a look at.The pre entered entries are pretty low at the moment so hopefully there wont be many more that turn up on the day ( she has only seen a max of 10 other horses at a show so far )I don't know a thing about showing but will enter her in a couple of classes just for some experience. Can you people have a look at her photo and tell me what you think.I am planning on putting her in inhand and ridden hunter 15.2hh & under but i dont know if the judge will say she is a cob type and therefore shoud be in the cob type class. She is Dales x TB.
Also , i am debating whether to hog her or not (her mane is very ropey for about 6 inches from the wither ) but YO says hunters should be plaited not hogged.what is correct?
thanks

Ooo what show are you going to? I am taking Ben out on Sunday showing as well - first ridden class this year (been too busy with Evy!)

As for Sophie, I'd say don't hog her. Trim her legs up, pull her tail and trim that too, hunter judges like short tails. That pic doesn't make her look very cobby, but in the flesh she does look more substantial, although I'd be tempted with her to stick with hunter rather than cob classes, as I think cobs would make her look rather small.

Wot she said^^Agree she isnt grossly fat enough to be a cob! Also get a dark numnah that fits the saddle better, hairnet and ideally a tweed jacket. Neck strap is not ideal unless its a 4 yr old- how about a running martingale fitted loosely?

I think you should def stick to the hunter classes, she looks a lovely hunter type
smile.gif
I would just trim her heels and like zoeshiloh says trim her tail to a couple of inches below her hock and maybe pull her tail. I would also def keep her with the mane as you will be doing the hunter classes and just make them look as good as you can (use lots of gel!!)
Good luck though she looks really good im sure your do brill.

P.S i would lose that numnah though, wud look much better without one.

L&DEC at waldingfield, in my new trailer! and your right, she is very substantial at the moment!
Are you going to the same show ? entries are very low considering how poplar it usually is. There will probably be an abundance of entries on the day.

Not all cobs are fat!

Agree that she shouldn't be hogged or in a cob class though. Take her in the hunter and have fun!

That pic was taken about 3 weeks ago and i swear she has put more weight on since then, she looks ok from the side, just don't stand in front of her and have a look.
That is my daughter on her there and i will be riding her on sunday, wont need a hairnet as i dont have any hair
tongue.gif
. I will take the neckstrap off .Does she have to have a numnah as i don't thik i have a plain dark one.I don't have a tweed jacket either..Oh well, we are only going for experience as you could never accuse Soph of being a show horse!
grin.gif

Ooo - you have changed my mind, think I'll go to that show instead! Trouble with Ben is because of his scar he doesn't do well in ordinary showing classes, but in veteran classes they don't tend to mark them down (depends on judge). Will prob enter a couple of classes though to make it worthwhile, just for the trip out!

Zoe ,ditch that and come to lavenham, have a look at the L&DEC website and click next event, it will bring up the classes and the current entries.I will be trimming her up /bathing etc tomorrow. I only decided to take her yesterday, talk about last minute!

He would do well in veterans class, i wouldnt worry to much about his scar, its only local level after all...Have you got a tweed jacket i could borrow ? lol i just bought a new navy one as hadn't planned on doing any showing! I am purely taking her as it's somewhere different and she hasn't really been anywhere since i've had her.

1) she is very pretty!
2) no not a cob a hunter! hence plait her! mane and tail! very neat, quarter markers. Ermm actually tail shoul be pulled at the top and cut shorter to just above the hocks
3) you should really have tweed jacket, long boots, and canary jods and shirt and tie
smile.gif

4) do you have a smarter hat? if not try to get your silk to sit lower at the front to appear more like a normal hat would!
5) Hunter and in hand she should have double reins! so preferably a double bridle or pelham bit should be used
6) hunter class, I noticed the red bow, she really should kick out if she is a hunter as manners are imperative!!! however if you put it in and she shows no "nastyness" etc then she should be fine, but just realise you may get marked down for it!

But she looks very pretty so I would think she will do well!
smile.gif

Also noseband! it should really be a big flat nose band, however, if this is the only one you have, at local level it shouldnt matter too much, but again may be a mark down point!

GOOD LUCK!
smile.gif

and on the numnah front - lose it if you dont have a dark one! without will look MUCH better!

the jacket wont be the end of the world, but if people turn up in the correct gear and tack, she will have to put on a fab show (or they will ahve to c*ck up royally) to get placed higher!

Do you have a more showy hat than your daughters?

Have definately decided to head for LDEC now, lol! Not many entries just yet though are there! Expect there will be loads of the day though.

I do have a spare hacking jacket as it happens, not sure what size it is though - will bring it with me so you can try it. Not sure on what other classes to do yet, am not too bothered about his scars, its only a bit of fun afterall! He's felt very neglected keep watching Evy go off to shows without him!

There is a lot more to this showing malarky than i thought! I havn't been to a show for more than 20 years and never done showing before! All i have is what you see there tack wise. Her saddle is synthetic as well which i know is a no no but she soo wide its the only one i could get to actually fit her! She has a red ribbon as i don't 100% trust her to keep her feet to herself. Her tail will have to be pulled as the bugger has rubbed all the top and its now about 2 inches long.
I think i'm going to take a wander up the tack shop...

Do you know where the show is Zoe ? just come through Lavenham and head for Sudbury,Just as you come into Waldingfield you will see Babergh Hall on your right, take the next right hand turn and the entrance is at the end of the field on the left. It's probably closer than TDRC as well.

Uh Oh I hope you have a large credit card
grin.gif
I can't believe the cost of everything these days - hence I am opening my own shop
grin.gif

I wish, i've just forked out 2.5K on a new trailer! I'll just have a look and see how much things cost as this will probably be a one off but i may do working hunter classes with her in the future.
Do hunters get marked on conformation ? we are in big trouble if they are lol

Yup, got postcode. Just trying to decide what classes to enter him in now, and hope that they don't clash. I definately want to do veterans, but perhaps either riding horse or ridden hunter as well? Might have to be ridden hunter, although he is a bit lightweight, as think riding horse might clash with veterans.

Last year they had some very nice horses in the hunter classes and i bet not one of them had seen a hound in it's life! Definately Put him in the riding horse, could put him in in hand riding horse as well. I'll have another look at the schedule but they are pretty good there if you are in another class also.Ring two has most entries at the mo so they may not clash.

I personally wouldn't hog, I don't think she is heavy enough to carry it off over all, nor do I think her neck will carry it off.

I'd plait up but do nice creaty ones around the top of the neck area to balance out her neck.

Thin her tail out then either pull it at the top or plait it.

Trim away around the jawline, ears, fetlocks etc.

I nice black discreet numnah that you can hardly see, must be the same shape as the saddle.

I take it she needs a drop nose band (otherwise she wouldn't' have it on in the pic) but for an inhand class I'd bob a nice flat hunter noseband on, it will improve the look of her head (not that there is anything wrong with that) I'm just saying it will look nicer.

Hair in a net then tied back into a bun/scrunchie etc

Make sure the hat silks is neatly covering the whole of the scull cap if the rider does not have a traditional one.

Juniors to wear joddy clips or those jods with the elastic at the bottom, cream/yellow would look nicer, paler/white ones don't look as nice.

Cream shirt to match the jods with a nice polkadot tie and tie pin.

Brown gloves, brown show cane, brown girth, brown joddy boots would all set the look off against his dark coat colour.

Quarter marks would also look nice.

Hacking jacket for WH class, but don't worry if you don't have one if its local level.

Have fun
smile.gif

yes confo is considered but so long as she doesnt have any legs sticking out sideways etc and does a nice show, its hardly noticed at local level. Its only if judge is stuck between 2 horses for a high place they generally take a closer look!

For tack Id say biggest starting point would be a bit! (and therefore another set of reins!) and noseband!
As we've said, no numnah is fab! (better than trying to get one under)
At local level...... your saddle is fine!!!!

Borrow ur mates hacking jacket as will give a better chance on the your appearance bit!

If you have to pull her tail FAB!!!!! and just cut a bit off the bottom so its just....... I cannot remember if it is above or below the hock! I think it may be just below, however if you cut it around level with her hocks, either way its happy!
smile.gif
and its striaght across like bangs!

In hand - walk around as a group. Judge then normally stops you at a corner and asks each competitor one by one to trot horse around the ring, to the rear of the group. Then you will walk around again once everyone has trotted. This is where it varies, as some judges pull you in in an order, and some just call you in wherever. You then bring the horse out to stand up in front of the judge. This is how they should be stood up;

confirmation_photo_300.jpg

You move the horse back a pace as the judge goes round behind the horse, so that he views them like this from the otherside as well (if that makes sense).

You will then be asked to walk away and trot back - walk straight away from the judge, then do a sort of keyhole shape at the end of the ring, and trot back straight at the judge - don't worry, he will move. Carry on trotting round the ring and back to your place in the lineup.

yup as zoe said! although some people present their horses infront of the judge stood square... if she stands square naturally/easily maybe do that! if not, try to stand as above!

When trotting in hand you have to run like u are racing lymphord christy (sp?!) to allow her to show her paces off nicely, but NO CANTERING!!!!!!!
smile.gif

when she is stood do NOT let her fall asleep or rest a hind leg she must be alert and concentrating at all times in the ring, and preferably with ears forward (so talk to her etc)

OMG, we are doomed if she has to have her ears forward all the time, Sophie has permanent PMT and is a grumpy old baggage!
grin.gif
I'm going to be so knackered after all that running. i better practice the running bit actually... She needs to be on a loose rein when trotting doesn't she ? This is going to be hilarious...zoe don't you dare bring a camera!

she has done WH before, but was at a disadvantage as she is just over 15hh which is the cut off for that class so was jumping against much bigger horses over some pretty enormous jumps.

Don't hog if you can avoid it, just trim and tidy.

Enjoy!

LMAO - didn't think of a camera before you said, will now make sure I have fresh batteries! If I end up doing veteran and Riding Horse, I'll wear my navy jacket, which means I could lend you my new hacking jacket. Will bring both anyway, just in case.

polos!! Hide a polo in your glove in hand and she will focus on that and I bet it puts her ears forward! doing in practicing as well then when you have finished give her it so in the show she is not nagging you for it as she knows she gets it when its over!
smile.gif

Yes practicing running preferably on a slightly loose rein (although this is not a necessary thing, just looks better) is good! its more the showy paces that is important! get a friend to watch and judge you! The faster you run the flashy the pace normally!
smile.gif

TAKE A CAMERA!

Oh thats ok, she cleared a 4ft chain link fence out of the field the other day so she can do it! around here they have very novice working hunter which are about 2ft which is perfect , for me anyway, Soph will probably look at the jumps and think i'm having a laugh.
