iv got an exracer that i have done some showing with, mainly ex racer classes and hes done prety well, anyway, im doing search for a star on him this you doing ex racer class, i would also like to do another class mainly for the experience, i get confused between the different classes, which one is he better suited to, hack or riding horse or neither, and just explain about the class, i know they need to be really well mannered etc but what do i wear and what tack should he have etc. and does the judge ride them.
and another question, i am currently schooling him in a pelham with two reins for the classes but he is very sensitive and only a tweak on the reins and hes going backwards, would i get away with a rugby pelham instead of a double, i just dont think he will settle in a double.

this was him showing 2008, hes 15.3

not sure re which class as i'm a cob person, but definately ok to show in rugby (or any other sort ) pelham - I use one to show my cob in (as do lots of folk if you look around!). If you are doing novice classes for anything (hack/riding horse/cob etc) you can just use a snaffle, and depends on show, but certainly some of our local shows judge rides too... hope that is of some help!

yes iv just looked at the schedule and they are, will he be ok in a rugby pelham? and what do you do in the class, it says correctly dressed grooms may be required? what is correctly dressed lol. and do you need to ride around with one hand haha, iv been practising!!

Hi! :)

First off, lovely horse!

Second - yes rugby pelham or loose ring snaffle pelhams are fine! (if you have a rugby use that, if not, then with him having a small TBy head, maybe the loose ring snaffle one would be better its just like a rugby but the joint between the shaft and the snaffle ring is much shorter..... )

dress for hack is show jacket (not tweed, its navy I think for hacks......... but someone might correct me to say black!) its black for evening classes I know that with a stock! Jods - beige/canary, tie for the day classes, brown gloves and show cane, black long leather boots. I think spurs but not sure....
Normal show hat (navy velvet with leather flesh straps, or a beagler but be aware not sure if beaglers are allwoed in SFAS)

Not sure about what the classes entail for SFAS as I havnt done it (but will do in the future one hopes! :) ) so will watch this with interest (although il be on a hunter prob rather than a hack! :) Id squish ur boy! :) )

Good luck! :)

My understanding of a correctly dressed groom is one who is not wearing jeans and a crop top (and no i'm not joking!!)... a well dressed groom should be correctly turned out ie jacket (tweed), trousers and short boots, or jods and long boots. They should be equipped with a small bag/box with wipes/brush/towel etc, be able to handle the horse and be able to give a leg up. My long suffering husband grooms for me, and I make him wear a shirt and tie, tweed jacket and cords to match. He has practiced giving leg ups til he can do them in his sleep!!
As far as I am aware you should wear (as said before) jacket (not tweed), shirt/tie, pale jods/long boots and yes spurs (I use dummy spurs because otherwise I would do lands end to john o'groats at land speed record!!... as far as I am aware dummy spurs are fine and ride judge for any class cannot wear spurs)
I think from memory horse can wear a velvet type browband too...?
