I have a showing show next Sunday and my mare has rubbed (or her boyfriend has groomed) a bald patch on her neck. It's about 10" long. I have enough mane for one plait above her withers but then it's 10" of short wisps until the mane thickens out at the crest upwards.

She always loses hair at that spot every year but this year is the 1st year that she has a boyfriend who is taller than her to groom her so that is taken a toll on the little hair she has left at that spot. She's a TB so not as if I can hog her mane either! I always save her mane from when I've pulled it in the winter but the wisps are too short for me to "weave" the hair on.

Will I get marked down for having 10" of "emptiness", lol.

Any ideas on how to get a plait on her?? :p

Yeh you would get seriously marked down cheap human hair extensions with a hair grip sewn into the bottom, had to do this with a gelding with the same problem.

Burgh! im having the same problem with my tb mare at the moment .. nice bald patch about 4inches up from her withers where the rug rubbed her mane out this winter .. im taking mine jumping in 2 weeks so mane not that important but it looks awful! :(

£22.50!!! I worked out that I would need to buy two sets as well as just the one wouldn't be long enough. According to the auction, they take 2 weeks so won't get here in time.

When I went to Canada last summer, I went to the dollar store and bought two length of fake hair in black for $1 each. I wonder how they get the plaits in those ebay ones all connected. I wonder if I could make my own??

*waves at OP from sideways on*

I had a similar problem early last year after winter neck rugs rubbed some mane away. I did loads and loads of tiny plaits and beefed up the whispy ones with lots of plaiting bands and bits of tail etc.

Recent pics of H on your blog make it look like you've got an inch or a bit less of mane to work with, which is about where I was at.

But then I hogged him :)

LOL, less than that now!!! More bits came off yesterday morning and show season is just beginning! :P I'm going to get my fake hair out of the shed and see if I can't cobble something together. tiny plaits have been a godsend though as then the wispy ones don't look so odd. I got told off by a showing judge thought in December, that I should only have 9 not 21 but I would DEFINITELY not manage 9 with Hat's mane!!

21!

Way too many, could you get 11 in?

As I said in my other post you can make your own like the ones I linked to (you wouldnt need to buy 2 seperately as I said they can be made to the length you want), it looks as though the long length of hair is intermittently plaited for a few inches then sewn into a ball, carry on a section of unplaited, section of plaited etc etc.

It doesnt look hard in theory but Ive no tail hair here to have a go.

The least plaits I have ever managed to get on Hattie was 12 and that was in the middle of winter when her mane was at it's fullest. If I do lots of small ones (LOL, learned to plait in Canada where 21 or more is the norm!), it makes her rubbish bald area plaits not look so miniature.

I'll have a go today with the fake hair I bought but if not, may have to conceed and fork out for some fake ones. April is turning into a expensive month (back lady, farrier, hay order, saddler coming to fix saddle, shows, now fake plaits...)!!

I know someone who had the same problem last season.
They snipped out a little tail hair from underneath and used to glue in the false plaits with human hair glue for shows. I thought it hilarious but I guess if you're very serious then maybe that's what you have to do. They actually won many championships!

I looked at her mane this morning and I don't even know if I'll be able to attach fake plaits if I make little round ones myself as in places, there are only a couple of hairs and those will come out if I attach anything to them.

I'll try plaiting that length of fake hair I bought and hopefully it will look like the one in the ebay auction.
