Showing question - Black or white hooves opinions please..

Friend has asked me to show her chestnut gelding for her - lucky me he's such a gent! Anyway his got 3 white socks and was wondering what colour to do his feet. He's got one black and the rest white so what would look better? Clear on all or black on all, I've got some of the supreme products black hoof paint which I use on my mare. Feel free to add photo's of what you do with your horses trotters! :)

I would go for clear on all. I put black on white hooves once (I was in a hurry to get to my class and couldn't find the clear) and it looked like I had coloured the pony's feet with a black marker pen :eek: :eek: I've never done it again :o :o
 
Clear. I was at a show a few weeks ago and quite a few of the horses had had their hooves painted black, unfortunately it was rainy and the ground was boggy and by the end of the day a lot of it had worn off revealing white hooves! It looked odd because they had a white leg, a black strip of hoof paint and then a natural hoof.
 
My friend put some of that black stuff on her horse's feet for a show.

The farrier came next day and he nearly fainted! He rasped every last bit of it off, and sold her some Kevin Bacon to put on for a week or so.

What's in it then? I wish I'd asked him now.

With some of the makes it literally is just like paint/gloss so would stop any moisture etc which is why some do say on the usage instructions that it should be removed and not left on. Nail varnish remover does the job quite well ;)
 
Some of these have special removers and some are apparently water based and just wash off

I personally hate black polish on any horse or pony, it looks fake and cheap

But its common in some of the classes and you'd look more out of place not having it (white socks or no white socks) I would research your class and do what is standard in that class
 
My coloured filly has 4 white legs but 4 black feet, she has ermine marking round the top of her hooves so she looks like she has been in mud lol.
I use Effol hoof grease with some baby oil in to make it shiny, stays on well & looks fine. I don't like the painted black hooves on white legs look but the Efool makes it look not so painted. I usually use clear Absorbine on natural or half & half hooves.
 
Hairspray removes the hoof black.

I personally hate painting them black but to get a look in - ridiculous I know - I had to join them!

Prefer the clear as at least if they tread on themselves before its dry it doesn't mark the white socks.

At higher levels the judges can sometimes frown upon 'artificial' colouring for certain types eg M&Ms - black varnish on white tootsies falls into this in my opinion.
 
I did black for our old mare as she had 2 white, 1 stripey and one black and it helped her look more even - she looked odd with clear polish :D

We still got placed county level :D

I use the absorbine stuff you apply with the sponge ball - put a couple of layers on and leave to dry completely before going into the ring and stayed on fine providing dry. If wet it had a habit of coming off as is water based. I have never taken it off - it comes off naturally in about 2 days.

As for a farrier rasping it off :eek: The rasping off will have done far more than the polish/varnish :eek:
