Hi, My husband is 62 and in the past broke both wrists which weren't set correctly, hence gets a lot of pain in them. He is showing his cob this year and we are starting out in a snaffle. But, would like to show in a pelham over the summer but we don't think he will be able to use 2 reins. To get the look I am thinking split reins???. We are doing Equestrian Life qualifiers and Seach for a Star.

I dont want to pay out for split reins if they are a complete no no.. help.

You usually see split reins used by children in the showring, I don't think I've ever seen adults using them. SFAS is pretty big stuff and 2 reins is the norm - either pelham OR double.

Is there a reason why he can't just hold the bottom rein loosely and ride off the top rein?

Sorry mickey...Split reins wouldn't really be acceptable in adult showing ...

To be completely correct, he would need to be in double or pelham with 2 reins (which doesn't help you much does it!)

Yes, thats what I thought about children using them, but they sell them in cob and full sizes, so I did wonder. Know what you mean about being in the big stuff, thats why I want him to be right.

I think we will have to give 2 reins a go at home. Like you have said, he can just hold the bottom rein loosely. Im sure he will find it ok once he has had a go. I think he is just worrying as his wrists can be so weak but it shouldn't make a difference should it.. Men!

Thanks for answering. x

thanks Royal.. He never listens to me, but I suppose thats called being happily married.. he's happy and I'm married.. haha.. (only playing)

I think I will tack the horse up before his next lesson with double reins and send him off in the manage for his trainer to sort him out.. haha.. Sorry Dark_Knight :-)
