Hello,

I know not the first thing about showing horses let alone sport horses. I know how to turn out though

Can anyone give me some advice? Or point me in the direction of a good book/guide?

I'm in the South East of England, nr The South of England Show Ground. I have a mare due to foal in June and ideally would like to show the two in August time.

Who do I contact? What do I wear? How do I go about it?

Any thoughts/advice would be gratefully received!

Cheers, Twig

PS How do you get rid of that 'stranger' marker then? Makes me feel like I'm an alian

(One that hasn't learnt how to spell!)

I have a sports horse. And from what I have read and looked at on the internet. You show them in a triangular show?!?!?! Ours has only been to 1 show as she is not yet 2. But last year we took her in the yearling class. And my daughter was showing her. Becky (daughter) wasn't too sure of what Callis reaction would be so she didn't really trot her out in her show as she wasn't sure if they would stop when needed, so Becky took it quite slowly although it was a trot. In fact Calli was the best behaved horse in the ring!!!!
She only got 3rd. And when the judge came up to her she said that as Calli is a sports horse she should have shown her as one and really let her stride out long in her trot. And that we shouldn't have put quarter markings on a coloured horse!!! Becky did explain it was her first show and they were taking it slow and the judge understood. We didn't have to do the triangular show in that class as she was being shown as a yearling.
So just make sure you trot out well.
Don't worry you won't be a stranger for long. It goes on how many posts you make. So get posting girl and it will soon creep up. Everyone is dead friendly on here and you will soon be an addict as we all are. Oh and horsey pictures are a must!!!!!!!

The triangle show is generally for warmblood classes and originated on the continent. It can be quite difficlut to get around the triangle and show the horses paces at a suffiecient speed, so practice is recommended.

The sports horses classes that we have at our county shows are more traditional and are the normal, show as a ride and then as an individual and then stand for conformation judging.

Handler dress is different for these two types but the horse is turned out the same.

Thank you for all your posts - I have a mare and foal so trottihng on a triangle would be interesting lol!

So does anybody know some good starter shows in the Sussex/Surrey area?

Is there a what to wear book that anyone is aware of? I've rung the SHB a few times but to be honest they haven't been that helpful, maybe I caught them on a bad day...

Um I'll have to work on the pictures, I love everybody elses!

My horse's blog is http://www.columbcillepenny.blogspot.com if anyone has a spare minute and is interested

wear tweed jacket, shirt, tie, plain coloured trousers (contrast to horses legs), brown gloves, boots you can run in, and a hat of some form either a trilby or beagler are the most popular. its the same for all inhand except arabs as they are wierd and welshies because they have problems keeping hats on at speed.

I would presume you turn them out as a hunter so plain riding bridle with plain flat cavesson noseband and plain flat browband. Foal in a foal slip.

Friend i help out at shows etc eith does them with her youngstock.

Dress as conniegirl said, then you walk and then trot in a clockwise direction around cones or flowerpots depending on the show. So get your horses used to these, the aim is to stay close to the cones although still turn smoothly if that makes sense. It allows the judge to see them move from all angles.

We're in E. sussex too and theres plenty of shows around... have a look in the H&H show directories as most of them are in there!

I did a Sport Horse class with Axel and it was on the triangle. However I lost marks for letting him trot on a bit too much with me and missed the turn at the end and had to circle him round.
They are marked on temperment and trainability and I lost marks on this and wish now I had kept him trotting slower round the triangle as you can let them trot out at the end along the long side of the ring

We came 6th out of a large class of 25 horses at the Kent County Show

Good Luck

Yes I also got marked down on temp as G ploughed me at high speed towards the other horses, so our triangel became a wonky square type thingy

Never came below third though.....
