Hi hive mind..

I have a young horse who seems to show some potential with showing. It’s not really been my thing in the past but I’ve decided to have a bash at it.

My horse is rising 4, so will be shown in hand but in adult classes this year. She’s an extremely large, buckskin warmblood. We’ve been out a couple of times to some smaller shows and she has been impeccably behaved and seems to have some natural presence in the ring and so my attention has turned to how I do her justice!

I’m struggling to know what the right attire for me is to wear, and my biggest predicament is trousers colour! She has extremely dark legs from the knee down, and is golden coloured above the knee. What colour would you wear to avoid visual conflict please?

Dark legs = light, neutral trousers for you. You could go for a darkish beige or a pale cream, whichever is farthest from her colouring. What you can get away with depends on which classes you are doing, so it might help to google classes at the big shows to give you an idea of what's required.

light coloured trousers, almost everyone i see at local level shows in jeans myself included, and i’ve never had it commented on by a judge!

I would go with beige trousers too, you need them to be a different colour to your horses lower leg so the judge can see the horses movement. Shirt and tie for showing, if it's warm you might get away without wearing a jacket but i think you need to ask permission from the steward. Jacket colour depends on what your showing your horse as.

Have fun!

When I show my boys in hand I go for whatever colour contrasts against their legs - so for Baggs (white legs) I'll wear black jeans and for Rabbit (dark legs) I'll wear a lighter colour (although ironically I broke this rule last year and in my rush to get out the house grabbed the wrong coloured jeans!), and you need to wear a tie not a stock x Everyone I see at local level wears jeans and smart trainers that are comfy to run in and the judges are ok with it x
