Hi, I am looking to gain weight on my welsh section d ,,, I have been advised to feed calf mik pellets have you done this ? what was the resault? xx thanx

I used to work on a yard that fed calf powder to anything that was really skinny when it came in. Smelt rancid but seemed to do the trick.

Hi Thanx for that.... is there anything I should be aware off that could cause harm to him? I feed him a small amount of dod n horll condition mix and chaff? cheers x

Why don't you ring a horse feed company for advice on feed to help your horse to gain weight safely? Most/all feed companies have free helplines with nutritionalists at the other end of the phone.

Echo this. Also the right sort of work to muscle the horse up rather than just feeding to make him fat.

... just wondering as well, why a welshie is not up to weight at this time of year? Most are too overweight at the moment. Perhaps it would benefit you to get someone experienced to have a look at your horse and to advise you - preferably a vet.

Hi yes he is looking good I think! but at a recent show, I was told that most are bordering on fat and I would need mine to be the same ! x

No showing class is worth deliberately making your horse fatter than he needs to be. As I posted on your other thread - have a look at the BHS' Fit not Fat campaign - if your horse is lean not fat or skinny then leave well alone!

I would also question if the person who told you that really knows what they are on about.

Eeek! Is it really worth risking lami and your horse's health for a few rosettes? Also, if it's just a bit of weight you need to get on (let's say for the sake of argument that he's a bit lean coming into winter) calf milk pellets seems a bit drastic! Much better to use an equine mix or conditioner.
I still think you should put your pony's heath first though.
