I have recently bought a wide 2inch nose band for him and it looks much nicer? do you think he needs more weight on him? i was told to feed him milk pellets to gain more weight as most in the ring border on fat?
No he looks fine to me, as he's on the finer end of welsh D's. There's a big difference between chunky (my girl) and fat, and judges are beginning to move away from liking fat horses.
I school her on the flat, but we also hack and jump... I will also lunge if I'm short on time. She's a traditional chunky D though so is a muscly girl!
I have done some lungeing in a harbridge as well as schooling and hillwork with my boy.
If I have one criticism of many horses you see in the show ring it's that they look very pretty in front with elevated action and head "in an outline" but the back end just trails along behind rather than them working properly.
You can't beat proper schooling with lateral work etc - just because you don't have to do it in the ring doesn't mean it isn't good for them.
Fit not fat! Look up the BHS campaign of the same title - please go for fit and not fat - that's what most of us showing them are going for (even if the not fat bit is a struggle for a lot of us!)
The trick is to watch various classes, and keep a record of the judges you show under and their response/your place...this way you can keep a list of the judges to show under. It would be pointless me telling you what judges favour my D, you need to know which ones like yours.
I would say go for female judges, in my experience they often prefer the modern finer D, but you will need to ensure your pony is exceptionally schooled, thats what will catch their attention...you can't compete with a flashy mover so you have to impress with correct schooling and perfect manners! Like lauraandjack said there's nothing worse than a big flashy front end with a back end just trailing behind!
