sadly to say who you know has been an increasing advantage in shows. Along with breeding, the owner, the judge, ect But stil alot is how you turn out, i went to show the other day with my boy who is quite succesfull (even if i am biased) and there were 5 in the class and i was placed second. i was happy with this untill i heard the judge speaking to my grandparents and he said if he knew that i was my grandfathers granddaughter and the horse belong to him then he would have put me first. This really annoyed me because it makes me question, did he like my horse? did he know the person who owned the horse who came first. my grandfather if friends with nearly everyone in the welsh cob showing 'world' as they all know each other well but it really annoyes me because everybody wants to win 'fairly' including me.
But as i said alot depends on turn out and performance on the day, and as for climbing up the ladder you have to have a good looking horse, because unfortunately no matter how much schooling, training, grooming if you dont have the natural 'wow factor' then you wont go far.
Thankyou and I agree with you , I have qualified for Midarc which im pleased with but I have been to shows where horses buck in the ring and then theyre still placed above others x I will upload pics if I can Id appriciate ur opinion x
It's one of the the things you have to deal with when it comes to showing, that it can be 'bent', and although it's wrong it would be almost impossible for it to end. Especially with the welshies when everyone knows everyone, and lots of favours get done, and who uses who's stallions etc etc. However there are a lot of good judges out there who do judge the animal and not the face.
We won at the Royal Welsh last year with no connections and not knowing the judge, which I think makes it extra special when your a 'nobody' and can win at the top.
