Showing - why is it so ridiculous?!

We did look scruffy though - I'd post a picture but I'm too embarrassed!

Hogged with his forelock left on, and growing out a bit, legs going through a bushy phase, tack a bit dodgy, noseband that wouldn't fasten properly round his big carthorse head. And his confo was ummm well shortlegged carthorse....

Second placed was a very smart warmblood well turned out who went clear and did a nice show.

lol :D I like your description :p

Well if you peeps will enter your hoses in who's got the prettiest class then what do you expect?

Showing is corrupt at county level, and renegade at local!

Pathologically hate any form of showing, not just because its so dull.....

I remember coming second in a working hunter championship on my impeccably behaved, brilliant 13.2 jumping pony, who also did work nicely (otherwise I wouldn't have wone my class). However, the lady that beat me was on a TB who she couldn't control who spent more time on two legs than four

I found out afterwards she happened to be lady so and so who owned the show ground, yeah thats hardly a surprise! I don't mind showing now though (taking a pony in veteran classes to keep my sisters baby horse company for the day) its all a bit of a laugh atm, and the oldie like being fussed for the day :)

Do you know 4 years ive been showing now chaps/bspa/county etc and i have never once felt that had happened, although im known by most of the riders/producers im up against the judges dont know who i am unless they are one of the above.. which has happend.

I am aware of some of the things that go on in the showing world, but again have never felt this has been the case in a class i have been in, and ive always felt placings were correct, in a class where my mare well and truely chucked her toys out the pram, I re rode the bit before and then took her back to the line up and apoligised to the judge but it was something that was creeping up on us and i had to get it sorted.

of course i lost my placing (and annoyingly would of gone from 5th to 3rd in a big class.) but the judge was lovely, even at the end of class she said she was sorry id gone unplaced, but understood why i did what i done, and id handled the horse well (id of liked to of whipped its arse tbh).

in a odd twist i took said horse again 48 hours later came under the same judge, and was fully expecting issues but nope mare was a star and ended the reserve champ.

see.. showing is not dull, you are producing a horse like any discaplin, and its not always about looking pretty!

See now that wouldn't bother me because you went clear, did a nice show etc. I don't care what jacket either because i showjump so wear my navy jacket and velvet hat, and your horse obv could go hunting. It just annoys me when someone has tonnes of faults yet gets placed above the clears. Why have the fences in there then?

Second point of the thread - im on one today!

Workers is judged on points, not by who is clear and who has faults. You lose 10 points for a knockdown and 15 for a refusal. However it is not like showjumping where a pole down can never beat a clear.

IF the horse with faults does a foot perfect show & has perfect conformation etc and they end up say 11 marks ahead of you this will balance out their knockdown so they will win.

It`s hard to explain but I hope you understand my point !

Marking is done as follows - from BSPS rule book.

Phase One

Jumping - 50
Manners & Style whilst jumping - 20

Phase Two

Manners - 10
Conformation, type and freedom of action - 20

Total = 100

Penalties Phase One

Knockdown - 10
Refusual - 15
2nd refusal - 20
3rd refusal - Elimination
Fall of horse or rider - Elimination

My sister was placed about 4th in a working hunter class a few years ago when there was only 2 clears (her being one of them). I wouldn't mind so much apart from the fact the judge brought everyone back in and walked them around for about 10 minutes. There was no show nor any form of anything other than walking around! The two horses that jumped clear both jumped cracking rounds and either of them should have won (neither did). My sisters horse is a true hunter type- cbxtb and a real leg in each corner sort. The other one was a TB. Fair enough if the winners show was better but all they did was walk!!

I enjoy doing a bit of showing over the summer- only local shows though. You always have to take it with a pinch of salt and if you are going only for the ribbons- you're in the wrong game!! I've had a lot of annoying moments though- the judge asking what this class was (it was a m&m!), people not taking the horses boots off and countless regular county show goers doing the trophy sweep (adults not children!)

Luckily I only do a little showing over the summer and my pony is much more versatile than a lot :)

Schedules normally print the judge, the more you do the more you know which ones to avoid. Quite often I won't enter a class as I know the judge doesn't like my horse, it's not that I am a pot hunter, I just can't see the point in wasting my money, diesel and judges time to enter a class they are judging it is also disheartening

Agree with this. I find some judges just have a type of horse they place etc. even if that isn't right so I look for which judge is judging at the show I am looking at.

for horses its slightly different

40 jumping
20 style and presence
20 Ride
20 Conformation

and unlike ponies if horses are tied on marks conformation mark comes first (which is just stupid in a jumping class) instead of jumping mark

It's not a jumping class though. It's a showing class with an attached jumping component in addition to the other components.
