I’m looking at doing a few ridden RoR classes over the summer, one of which has a ride judge. I’ve looked at schedules, rules, videos etc., and I’m still not clear on whether you do an individual show in these classes as well as the horse getting ridden by the judge. I suspect not because it would take all day, but would appreciate any advice…and any other tips on RoR classes…it seemed like a good idea when i entered them but 🙀

Generally, when you have a ride judge then you wont also do an individual show.
You'll do the go round, plus run up in hand, so practice standing horse up well and also to walk out well in hand, turn and trot back, it's one of the things that amateurs fall down at (not saying you are rubbish at it but worth saying!).
Try and get others of different weights to ride your horse before then, get them to walk away and then get straight into trot on both reins and canter.
Also, see if you can get a couple of shows in for practice, some ex racers need work put in to settle well before trotting and cantering round as a group, as can find it exciting.
Good luck 🤞

If you can do the amateur class then that is not ride judges and you do individual show. It is ride judged at the final. If you’ve not done classes with ride judges before then practical point make sure you’re stirrup leathers can go short and long as ride judges vary in height a lot !! Get your horse used to someone getting on picking up the reins and walking off smartly. First impressions count. Enjoy. Most RoR competitors are lovely 😀

The other thing to bear in mind is that ride judges hardly take any contact. They are there to enjoy the ride. They want lightness in everything and to feel that they don’t want to get off. I have done a bit of ride judging and I want everything to happen with the lightest of touches.

Also make sure your stirrups are big enough incase the judge is a man!!

He’s mostly a dude, so would hope he’d give a good ride…just hoping it’s not to
Overwhelming for him! Thanks all for the great advice!!

You won't know until you try. I've done a few ROR classes on my boy, no ride judge, and really enjoyed them. Good luck and please let us know how you get on!

Just hope that they don't get off and declare 'I don't think he wants to be a show pony!' 🤣
I think the challenge classes (with jumps) are an individual show rather than ride judge.
Good luck and have fun!

I thought you it was allowed to request the judge didnt ride your horse and you could ask to do your own individual show instead? I looked into this before (just in case!) although it wasnt specifically for RoR classes

At affiliated level it's a ride judge I'm not familiar with Ror classes though.

I just asked a few people to hop on mine for 5 minutes like a judge would when I was schooling at home.

One of mine was better with the judge ride and I often got moved up the line afterwards.

The other one never went as well so I sometimes got moved down 🙈

To be fair…he’s prob more likely to go well with the judge than with me!! I’m a bit relieved there’s no individual show…not because he’s naughty but because I’m a bit rubbish!! 😂
