My Newfie was shown VERY sucessfully last Season, even winning rozzy's and money at the NFPBCS Show...

He tried his hardest over the winter to commit suicide..EVERY evening he would come in with something damaged.

Anyhow, the reason of my post is this...

He managed to get a cut on the outside of his off front cannon bone, which became infected quite badly, therefore 5 days box rest, etc etc...

well, now he has something that looks like a small splint on the leg..not a splint obviously as its on the outside!!

should/could i still show him in-hand this year??

he is a great looking pony, and would still like to be able to..

2 camps here.....members in each...

what do you think??

pony last year, as a yearling....

Pretty pony!!

You might find the swelling goes down with time, it could just be another knock and he has bruised the bone.

I'm afraid I can't see the pic (work internet policy) but in general terms I know you don't need me to tell you the line "it goes on conformation first, then if its equal in confirmation as another horse the other one will get the higher place."

In reality I think it does make a massive difference to showing in-hand. F has a scar on his hind leg and never does well in-hand - always placed but moved down once they notice that. Ridden, however, he excels at - I've put it down to less importance put on the scars and blemishes when ridden, even if the judges do all simply quote the above when you ask

Obviously ridden isn't an option for your boy yet, so all I can suggest is try a couple and see where you get. It sounds as if he has done amazingly well so far.

so fingers crossed for you that the judge doesn't discount him just for that. If you do decide to suck it and see, let us know how you get on!

I think that as it's an obvious injury, rather than a confirmational error, then yes you should show him in hand.

We have a big coloured that had a basal cell tumour on his side. The operation left a big scar.
We took him to a show for a day out and he won the coloured class.
It was hotly contested. The CHAPS judge told us to register him and carry on showing.
Because of this i would say go for it. Good luck and well done

I would still show him, Axel had a bad kick on his front leg which has healed into a lump on the side of his pastern. I took him to the UK champs like it and I don't think the judge even noticed tbh and he won his class.

You can only try it and see can't you?
Normally, I'm "a it must be perfect" type for it to go in the ring but as this is an obvious war wound and not a fault of conformation, then I'd still try it again.
If it's all healed over and strong now isn't there something that you can rub/paint on that will help in shrinking (for want of a word!) the blemish although I think in all honesty, it is time that does that best. Also, camouflage is helpful too!

i think you will be fine. Obviously you may get some judges that are overly picky but it would have to be an incredibly picky one o place you down for that.
I used to show my NF with a obvious splint on his front leg and not once did any judge pick up on it.

i, too, like them to "look the part" and i suppose the only thing i can do is to "suck it and see"!!

I've also been painting on DMSO...and it has visably shrunk since March..so i'll give it a go ..

thanks all
