Hello,
I'm looking to enter my 14hh pony in a riding pony class.
Just wanted to know the basics really, like what tack, saddle pads, what do I wear, how must she be turned out?
Thanks

Riding pony classes are all about elegance.

Brown tack, double bridle, stitched noseband, fancy velvet browband, straight cut saddle to show off shoulder, discreet wool numnah. Plaited mane, pulled tail, everything trimmed smart.

Rider in navy jacket, navy hat, yellow jods, brown jodhpur boots.

Riding pony classes are for children normally so check the age range.

I just replied to the OP's other post asking the same question. She's 19, so I answered long boots given her age. Was I wrong? I also said tweed jacket - I thought that was the go for a daytime ridden pony show class.

Apologies if I've led you astray, OP! I'm happy to stand corrected.

If you are entering an M & M class, don't trim one single hair.

You should dress correct for the class even if your the 'wrong' age. That's why adults riding small M&M still wear short boots.

Riding pony is navy jacket, hunter pony is tweed jacket

I'm assuming it's a local show so there'll probably be all sorts of attire going on!

No, an adult riding an M & M can wear long boots. Short boots tend to be worn because it improves the picture. Never known an Exie marked down for rider in long boots.

I said IF an M & M class - Don't trim. If not, do what you want.

Yes, there are no rules regarding boots for adult riders, I said that. Short boots tend to be worn as they improve the proportion & don't "Cut the pony in two".

Ok, here's my honest advice. Brown tack. Clean & well fitted. No saddle cloth. Double bridle not necessary if it's your beginnings into showing.

You tweed or navy jacket, canary jods & short or long boots, whichever is comfortable for you. Shirt & tie. Black hat or skull with black cover.

MOST IMPORTANTLY - Enjoy it, have fun. Show your pony off, pick up that rosette & canter round with it. You'll be fantastic.

:)

Thank you for your advice!
I have all brown tack:)
I have a black jacket or tweed which would be better?
Also is it shirt and tie? I have a red tie? With a red bow for my hair? And I have black short boots or long which do you think would be better? Thank you so much for your help!

Also, this is my mare, she is a part breed Connemara cross with riding pony, could I do an M&M class with her and what's the turn our and outfit rules with that? Sorry very new to showing but would love to give it a go!!

Don't Trim M&M's?? My D (and many others) are trimmed within an inch of their life!!! ha ha ha!!!!! If an adult riding a small breed m&m such as Sec A Sec B Darty Shetland Exmoor etc then should really wear short boots, HOWEVER there are no rules against it.

OP if you want a decent answer regarding showing... pop over to horse gossip forum which is full of show mad people.. including myself :D

Riding pony you will need navy jacket, plaited browband, plaited mane and pulled tail. Heres a link to the photos of last years HOYs riding ponies http://www.esphotography.co.uk/even...r/2015/day/63/category/SATCALClass42CCamera2/ ..... this will give you a good idea. :) And enjoy!

No you cant do m&m because shes a part bred, she will have to go plaited. Have you got a photo of her at all?? To see her stamp?

Also... Navy jacket if you can get one not black or tweed.

Am I wrong in thinking 19 is over the age limit for show pony classes?

Saddles - qualified to comment on that one, beware the ultra close contact showing saddles with very thin foam panels that are prevalent across the showing world, I would not recommend them. Look to a good flocked panel in most cases, and find a fitter that is experienced at fitting your shape of pony, they're not always that easy to fit often being wide and flat.

A riding pony class is a show pony class with age limits according to size pony

Something people get confused about as they assume its for any ridden pony

Correct turnout is navy jacket and hat, pony trimmed and plaited, velvet browband, quarter marks

However at local level you'll see all sorts.

Depending on the type of your pony you could perhaps turn out as a hunter pony since you have a tweed tweed jacket and plain browband - technically not correct for riding pony classes but you'll be more correct than most others lol

If the show is larger when you see 'riding pony' or 'Childrens riding pony' its for show ponies with rider age limits and anything else would look out of place

If your show is small you can always check with the secretary and check the wording as my local show has a class for 'ridden pony' which is practically anything that isn't an M&M - the subtlety of wording makes a world of difference
