Hello

My daughter has a pony she rides in a gag as she is definitely not a snaffle mouth!

We have been doing some inhand showing with her but would love my daughter to be able to do some ridden showing also. Is it acceptable for a 7 year old, with sympathic hands to ride in a Pelham with roundings?

Or I could teach her to ride with double reins, if that is acceptable?

Thank you
Kirsty

For first ridden classes it probably wouldn't be quite the thing, as you'd be drawing attention to the fact that the pony is strong aka possibly not a first pony!

Most rules and guidelines state children's classes should be in snaffle bridles.
However lots of people use a wilkie which has a gag action, and would be closer to ponys normal bit so might be worth giving it a try.

There used to be split reins that children used for showing they look a bit better than roundings, and alot of ponies are ridden in butterfly pelhams as they don't have a shank as such so not such a harsh bit then.

I will see if I can find them.

Thank you both for your replies.

She'd more of a 1.5 pony to be honest, safe as houses but strong! I was thinking more M&M classes or such. Would only be very low level.

I will look into both of your suggestions, really appreciate it.

Would a wilkie snaffle work? In my past showing days I'm sure they were allowed under 'snaffle only' rules and give a gag sort of action?

I'm going to see if I can pick one up ans see how she is at home with it. If not the butterfly Pelham with split reins look like the next best option I think
