Showjumper manes anonymous

I keep my horses mane long so I can do running plates.
BUT -
If I was to want it shorter, I'm a bit confused on what I should do. Her mane is really thin so I wouldn't want to pull any out. And apparently scissors are evil. What do I so?

This thread is a bit tongue in cheek :P I will pull or use scissors depending on how thick the mane is :P

My new horse arrived with a very thick scissor cut mane and D_D was taking the mick, hence the thread :D

If its thin cut it :) Will be fine!

I don't think it'll ever be short apart from the odd trim so it isn't too long, but was just checking so I didn't get a lynch mob at my gates!

My mate recommended a hairdressers thinning comb from Boots (ours had the scissored look when we got her!) and it was cheap (about £7 inc a pack of spare razors for it) and works really well as I don't like pulling.

I thought he looked awesome in his pics. And mane was smart and tidy. I know it's tongue and cheek but I've slowly gone away from the "only ever pull" to the scissors. Lots of ways to do it and have it look quite nice besides cutting straight across.

Get yourself a native pony, wash and prep all that hair for showing.........

then you can almost guarantee that the night before a show all those lucious locks will be rubbed out to showjumper length;)

I'm a hairdresser, I have never pulled my horses mane, always scissor cut it! but I like her to have a long mane, so it doesn't look silly and bowl cut like haha!

My horses mane doesnt need to be any thinner so I dont pull it, just plait him and cut the excess off- makes plaiting easier too. Yes, his mane looks bloody awful when its undone, but i dont really care and plaits look neater :)

Diesel dog, you are my hero ;). If I attack a mane with any kind of implement whatsoever the poor horse in question ends up a total dog's dinner (not literally of course). I thought I could compromise with a Solo Comb but no, you then end up with the hair bear bunch. In despair at my tonsorial skills, I bought a hairy cob. Her mane is now 2'9". I'm wondering, how long is TOO long? It must weigh about a stone by now! I don't trust myself with the scissors ...

Never been very good at pulling, but I now have the perfect solution!! My bestest livery friend used to work for David Tatlow so pulls my boy's mane to perfection :D

I'm so tempted to get a pair of scissors out and have at my boy's mane. I love very short manes, but his is way too think to pull. I'm a little nervous though - what if a scissor cut mane makes him think he's a showjumper?

i absolutely love the straight cut showjumper look ! its so smart and sleek. i take it as a personal insult my horse has whorls all the way down his neck so his mane is rubbish and must be kept to 2 inches long so it looks anything llike a tidy mane:rolleyes:
i use a mane rake for really thick manes to get the bulk out of it before trimming

I always find a pulled mane looks great to start.. But when it starts to grow there are spikes everywhere which you don't get with a scissor cut mane so makes plaiting so much easier in my opinion
