A mixture of pulling, scissoring and then cutting up into the mane to thin it and take away the sharp edge. Works well

I tend to cut up into the mane to take the edge off it. I do have to pull the underneath on one of them as his mane is really thick for a warmblood. Most people don't realised I have used scissors, basically just copied my hairdresser when she does my fringe! Interesting someone else cuts a "shattered" edge.

Pretty much everyone I know on the yard either pulls the tail or clips to thin it out at the sides at the top of the dock. Probably varies from area to area.

I have one of our that I cut with thinning scissors as his mane is too thin to pull. I then trim the long spiky bits off with normal scissors.
