Showjumping report - should have stayed in bed

[ QUOTE ]
Mine would have perfect days but would be very opinionated at shows and out hacking. It's just a thought, that's all.

Your probably right, just dont know what to give him instead, anything with mollases brings him out in bumps, as do any cereals. He has had ulcers so we are pariniod about that too!

Oh MH, how bl00dy frustrating for you

Are you sure that nothing else is upsetting him? Like teeth, back etc or is this a normal thing for Jerry?
When Boo started acting up, i'd had enough and that is when we sent him away to the Wiegersma's. It probably wouldn't suit every horse but it made the world of difference to him. The place was so big and so much was going on all the time that he was totally gobsmacked for 2 weeks but he came back a very grown up boy and i'm now able to carry on where I left off with the training.
I'm not suggesting you send him away, I'm worried he has other issues going on, or he could just be an awkward brute

Don't hurt yourself anymore tho E, get your ankle checked out because you don't want to spend another 6 weeks resting it do you?

If you haven't done already, get J's teeth and back looked at.

Am so sorry yesterday was shite for you

Everything possible has been checked, he even had his back xayed when he had his kidney problems to make sure there wasnt anything else bothering him. He is just a git!

Just spoken to my trainer and she is going to jump him this afternoon for me and see what she thinks.

I am so sorry to hear this, i do hope you are ok.
It was really good to meet you, as i said he looks so fantastic when he is going well hes just a little sod isnt he!!
You ride him so well and calmly though and i dont think you could have done anything else to keep him calm.
I really hope your ankle is nothing serious and it mends soon

Hiya
Sorry to hear you had such a rubbish day and hope that its nothing too serious with your ankle.
Just a thought on the feeding, the only thing that keeps my arab sane is Simple Systems, which is alfalfa with absolutely no mollasses or anything else in it, basically! Keeps the weight on him without him losing the plot!! Yu've probably thought of it before but it might be worth a try? Sometimes even if there is no logical explanation for it a change of diet can make a difference?

What he is on is basically the same, Alfa oil and beet no mollasses. Had a long talk to my vet about feeding an she is really against simple systems. I had tried him on the grass nuts and they brought him out in bumps, my vet spoke to SS and discoved they do actually have mollasses in even though they say on the bag they dont!!!!

Could you change the alfa-a to something like happy hoof or hi-fi? I don't know if they do anything like that?

How is he on haylage? I assume he gets adlib forage?

I can say that mine was lean until the winter between his 6th and 7th birthdays (!!) but had enough energy so lived on pony nuts and haylage. He then muscled up over the following summer and this winter is positively plump. I reckon I'd be less concerned about weight and more about his energy levels, (obv without letting him look ribby) and consider cutting out the alfa products. Could speedi-beet be an alternative? It has no molasses IIRC?

I think, and I apologise if I'm being totally unhelpful, that I'd try upping the oil as 2008 has said and swapping from alfa-oil and alfa-beet to speedibeet - just cut out the alfalfa all together. If horses are that way inclined it does seem to make them very opinionated, plus IIRC it increases photosensitivity so if your chappy is already a sensitive soul then it may cause issues in the summer anyway.

Ah ok, I only feed the luci-bix and it has totally reformed my lad's character but luuckily he's not massively sensitive to anything feed-wise.
Best of luck!

I can try I suppose, cant do any harm

That was my reaction when someone told me to cut out the alfa-a, I was utterly convinced it could not be that as well, it's basically fibre and you'd feed it to anything (well I would have done!).

I now am completely the other way inclined and wonder how many horses which are only worked a couple of times a week and are just on a bit of alfa-a are bonkers because of that, not because it's their true nature.

Thing is, you have nothing to lose, so you may as well try, and it is a hell of a lot cheaper than some of the other possibilities like sending him away, so you may as well give the cheap idea a go first I reckon (that was my theory - everyone told me to get his back and teeth done, so I tried the cheap option first and thankfully it worked as back and teeth had both been done in the previous couple of months!)

alpha a has also sent Millie bonkers as they changed her from hi-fi to that as a matter of course, and apparently her attitude competely changed and she was a complete a*se hacking out.

I have a silly 17.1hh tb who has taken ages to mature and settle (he is still a prat) I am lucky in that he does have a kind nature and isn't nasty however I must admit that for the past 2 years he has had no hard feed and has been kept a bit under because I would not be able to ride and train this horse if he was feeling really well. Now that he has matured he is getting proper food and I know he is sane enough to take the work and feed maybe you should consider keeping Jerry a little under? Just a thought don't shoot me down!
